I write a SCSI CD Audio player for the #C64. It’s written in BASIC, but I’m planning on porting it to C64 OS soon. It’s pretty cool. Pretty fast too, considering it’s in BASIC.

Huh... I think features are coming faster on C64OS than any other OS right now.

Nice! I think I remember M&T "64'er" magazine had a one-liner that played audio tapes from the datasette deck via SID and it gave a nice (read: terrible) bitcrusher effect, but I never found the code again.

How do you interrogate the device? Is it given a device No?

The CMD HD DOS includes support for raw SCSI commands. Here's the relevant page from the CMD HD User Manual.

Audio goes via 3.5mm jack, I suppose?

The CD ROM drive has stereo RCA jacks on the back. In the video, you can see a Rolls mini mixer on top of the drive stack. I feed everything: SIDs, DigiMax, CD ROM, iPhone Dock, into that mixer. Outputs to one set of Harman Kardon sound sticks. Works great! 👍

Ah. That makes senses so your basic program isn’t reading the data and generating output sound by tweaking the aid very fast. Where there wouldnt be a way you could move data fast enough or run that loop in basic , but is basically telling the cd rom - go ahead your self and play track 5 ?

@frakimo Yes, that’s right.

@frakimo Sweet. Definitely and interesting and fun challenge. Is the way to control the CD player other than as just data some consistent protocol or bespoke from device to device ?

@frakimo Playing audio CDs is a standard part of the SCSI command set for all CD-ROMs. On PCs the CD ROM’s audio output would be fed into the motherboard somewhere and mixed with other audio sources.

Compiled basic or interpretive?

Not compiled. It's just regular ol' BASIC 2.0.
