The song was released by Deep Purple and it was born on a tour bus going to Portsmouth in 1971 when a reporter asked the band how they wrote songs. To demonstrate, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore grabbed an acoustic guitar and began playing a riff consisting of a single "G" repeated over and over, while vocalist Ian Gillan improvised lyrics over the top. The song was refined and was performed that same night. The song first appeared on the 1972 LP Machine Head and remained one of the band's live concert staples, being the set opener even before it was released on any album.

Q: Among all of your songs that you wrote, what's your favorite song? 🐱: Tomorrow, I really like that song because I wrote it in high school. I wrote the beat and stuff when I was a trainee and wrote the melody and lyrics when I was in hospital after my appendix burst. The song itself has a hopeful tone.

The song's distinctive guitar riff originated with Sting, but guitarist Andy Summers rearranged and transformed it into the intricate part heard on the recording. "Message in a Bottle" became The Police's first No. 1 single on the UK Singles Chart, spending three weeks at the top in 1979. It also topped the charts in Ireland and reached No. 5 in Australia and No. 2 in Canada. Surprisingly it peaked at only No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.

This week’s #FridayFeeling #guitar post goes out to British rock band Cream and their iconic hit, “Sunshine of Your Love”. Written by Jack Bruce, Pete Brown & Eric Clapton, it was originally released on the album Disraeli Gears in November 1967, and as a single in January 1968. It’s been the inspiration for millions of aspiring guitarists worldwide. Bruce and Clapton attended The Jimi Hendrix Experience show at the Saville Theatre in London. After the concert, Bruce returned home and wrote the riff. Clapton later wrote the song's bridge & title. Clapton's guitar tone on the song is created using his 1964 Gibson SG guitar through a wah-wah pedal and a Marshall amplifier. Cream's American record label, Atlantic, didn’t like the song but changed their mind when Booker T. Jones (of Booker T. & the M.G.'s, whose Stax label was at the time distributed by Atlantic) said he loved it. Have a great #weekend everybody! #rocknroll #classicrock

The Rolling Stones - Angie (1973) The big rumor about this song is that it was written about David Bowie's wife, Angela, who wrote in her autobiography that she once walked in on Bowie and Mick Jagger in bed together - a story Jagger denies. According to the rumor, Jagger wrote this song to appease her, but it was Jagger's bandmate Keith Richards who wrote most of the song. Jagger had this to say about it: "People began to say that song was written about David Bowie's wife but the truth is that Keith wrote the title. He said, 'Angie,' and I think it was to do with his daughter. She's called Angela. And then I just wrote the rest of it." There was also speculation that Richards' girlfriend Anita Pallenberg inspired this song, but Keith cleared it up in his 2010 autobiography Life, where he wrote: "While I was in the [Vevey drug] clinic (in March-April 1972), Anita was down the road having our daughter, Angela. Once I came out of the usual trauma, I had a guitar with me and I wrote 'Angie' in an afternoon, sitting in bed, because I could finally move my fingers and put them in the right place again, and I didn't feel like I had to s--t the bed or climb the walls or feel manic anymore. I just went, 'Angie, Angie.' It was not about any particular person; it was a name, like ohhh, Diana. I didn't know Angela was going to be called Angela when I wrote 'Angie.' In those days you didn't know what sex the thing was going to be until it popped out." This was the first single released from Goat's Head Soup. It wasn't typical of their sound, since most of the band's material at the time was hard and aggressive. Still, it was a huge hit, and their only ballad that hit #1 in the US.
