“I wrote ‘Changeling’ on the guitar: a picking riff at the front, and a sequence heavily influenced by the Rolling Stones in the verses. That was almost a proper song, and it became quite popular in the incipient New Romantic clubs in London." - Charlie

A lot of people don't realize this popular guitar instrument hit song was a cover version. It was originally an instrumental composition written and originally recorded by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954. It was the cover version of the song in 1960 that made it climb the charts. The song is included in Rolling Stone's top 100 guitar songs of all time. Can you name the song and who made it famous?

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow performing 'Highway Star' live at Loreley, Germany Memories in Rock, in 2016. The song was released by Deep Purple and it was born on a tour bus going to Portsmouth in 1971 when a reporter asked the band how they wrote songs. To demonstrate, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore grabbed an acoustic guitar and began playing a riff consisting of a single "G" repeated over and over, while vocalist Ian Gillan improvised lyrics over the top. The song was refined and was performed that same night. The song first appeared on the 1972 LP Machine Head and remained one of the band's live concert staples, being the set opener even before it was released on any album.

1964. London. Ray Davies, wrote this raw, unforgettable riff that became their breakthrough hit. It hit #1 in the UK and the Top 10 in the U.S., adding a gritty, energetic edge to the British Invasion. Who likes this today? Name the band.

Q: Among all of your songs that you wrote, what's your favorite song? 🐱: Tomorrow, I really like that song because I wrote it in high school. I wrote the beat and stuff when I was a trainee and wrote the melody and lyrics when I was in hospital after my appendix burst. The song itself has a hopeful tone.

This week’s #FridayFeeling #guitar post goes out to British rock band Cream and their iconic hit, “Sunshine of Your Love”. Written by Jack Bruce, Pete Brown & Eric Clapton, it was originally released on the album Disraeli Gears in November 1967, and as a single in January 1968. It’s been the inspiration for millions of aspiring guitarists worldwide. Bruce and Clapton attended The Jimi Hendrix Experience show at the Saville Theatre in London. After the concert, Bruce returned home and wrote the riff. Clapton later wrote the song's bridge & title. Clapton's guitar tone on the song is created using his 1964 Gibson SG guitar through a wah-wah pedal and a Marshall amplifier. Cream's American record label, Atlantic, didn’t like the song but changed their mind when Booker T. Jones (of Booker T. & the M.G.'s, whose Stax label was at the time distributed by Atlantic) said he loved it. Have a great #weekend everybody! #rocknroll #classicrock

August 25, Eventim Apollo, London. Jack White stepped into the spotlight only hours after Dolly Parton left us at 80… and answered with a spectral, heartbreaking “Jolene.” In that moment, the song became a farewell letter written in guitar and voice.

“Cruel Summer” was released in 1983 as a standalone single by Bananarama and was later included on the American edition of the group’s 1984 self-titled album. Inspired by a rare heatwave in London, the song captured the frustration and restlessness of a sweltering city summer, while its video was filmed in New York during another bout of intense heat. The single reached #8 in the UK, but it was its inclusion in The Karate Kid (1984) that gave it major exposure in the United States, where it reached #9 on Billboard Hot 100 and became Bananarama’s first American Top 10 hit.

“More Than a Woman” was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Recorded by the Bee Gees in 1977, the song became one of the soundtrack's most memorable romantic tracks. Unusually, the soundtrack contains two official versions of the song: the Bee Gees' own recording and a cover by Tavares, with both versions also appearing in the film. It was the Tavares version that became the commercial hit, reaching No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart. The Bee Gees' recording was not released as a single in the US or UK, although it was issued as a single in some other markets.
