I’d like to introduce the Hyundai Comboy 64, the final Nintendo console released by Hyundai Electronics. In 1997, South Korea was hit by the IMF financial crisis, which caused the value of the Korean won to collapse. As a result, the prices of imported products skyrocketed, and many companies... were pushed into bankruptcy. Hyundai Electronics was no exception. Shortly after the launch of the Comboy 64, the situation worsened rapidly. Only four titles that had already been prepared were released, after which Hyundai withdrew from the console business altogether. The number of units sold was very limited, and today, surviving hardware is considered extremely rare. After this, both Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Electronics completely exited the game console market. Because of this, consoles like the Hyundai Comboy and Samsung Game Boy series were officially released in Korea, but they were expensive, so they didn’t sell particularly well. Still, up through the 16-bit era, Korean systems used the Japanese regional code, which meant Japanese games could be played on officially released Korean consoles. That compatibility helped sales to some extent. The Samsung Saturn, however, was a different story. Samsung chose to use the American regional code instead, which meant Japanese Saturn games would not work on the system. From Samsung’s perspective, this decision was meant to prevent people from using illegally imported Japanese games. But in the end, it backfired. Not many games were officially released for the Korean market, and users also couldn’t play the huge library of Japanese games. People who bought the Samsung Saturn without knowing this often ended up disappointed because there simply weren’t enough games to play. The Samsung Saturn had a rather sad story behind it.

Koreans are extremely competitive. The country was a 3rd world and their companies were the laughing stock of the world 40 years ago. Now, Hyundai surpassed GM, Ford, Honda. Samsung is the #2 electronics company in the world and encircled Apple with patents, and they're a Top 5 leader in robotics. All from a country the size of Indiana.

This is the Samsung Handy Gam Boy, the version of the Sega Game Gear that was imported and sold by Samsung in Korea. It’s one of the harder Samsung gaming systems to find, making it quite a challenge for collectors. Because of that, a fan produced a small batch of reproduction units. Even the box was faithfully recreated, and they went as far as reproducing the “Handy Gam Boy” branding on the console itself. I was never able to get an original one, so I’m really happy to have something like this to fill that gap in my collection. 😊

The original PlayStation’s impressive 3D capabilities have somewhat overshadowed it over the years, but SEGA was actually a company that was deeply committed to 3D gaming from the very beginning. In arcades, they were producing 3D games on a completely different level from their competitors, and they were constantly experimenting with new ideas on the home console side as well. If you look at the Mega Drive version of Virtua Racing, SEGA managed to bring over an arcade-quality experience by adding a special processor directly into the cartridge. Seeing that success, they likely realized that a dock-on device with its own dedicated hardware could allow the Mega Drive to handle 3D games—especially SEGA’s arcade-style 3D titles. That idea eventually became the 32X. At the time, the Mega Drive (Genesis) was incredibly popular in North America, so the concept definitely had potential. The problem was its timing. The 32X launched around the same period as SEGA’s next-generation console, the Sega Saturn, which created confusion in the market. If it had been released even a year earlier, giving players earlier access to games like Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, it might have achieved much stronger sales. And by the way, the Mega Drive shown in the video is a custom modification that combines the console and the 32X into a single integrated unit. 😆

Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

Due to low quality control and shovelware titles, the video game market was cooked. Nintendo wanted to change this stigma. Their system was not a video game console, it was an entire 'entertainment system.' The console was redesigned to work like a VCR, moving from a top loader to a front insertion slot, like a VCR. Accessories were also included - such as Rob the Robot - an add on that claimed hours of fun. Rob was a gimmick to sell consoles and Nintendo knew robots would sell the system - and it worked. If you ever played with Rob, you know just how horrid it was. 😫

The Nintendo 64 was truly revolutionary because it established many of the fundamentals of 3D game design that are still used today. Wave Race 64 is a jet ski racing game, and its wave simulation was absolutely incredible for its time. The way the jet ski reacts to the constantly changing waves is so realistic that it’s still impressive even by today’s standards.

I still remember standing in a game shop, completely mesmerized, staring at that game for a long time. I was really hoping it would come out on the Super Famicom too, but maybe because of hardware limitations, it never did. That made it even more shocking. Today is the release day of the Star Fox remake. Unfortunately, it’s coming out a few days later in Korea, but it still brings back a lot of memories of when the original Star Fox 64 was released on the Nintendo 64. Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 were incredible games, but Star Fox 64 was also a huge hit when it launched. Unlike its predecessor’s simple linear progression, it introduced all-range mode, allowing players to freely fly around a 3D space during certain missions and boss battles. This made the gameplay much more dynamic and varied. It also added a new 4-player versus mode, which was a lot of fun with friends. The graphics were impressive for the time, and the full voice acting helped make the game far more immersive. Most importantly, Star Fox 64 was the first Nintendo game to support the Rumble Pak. What is now considered a standard feature in game controllers essentially started here. The shock of feeling controller vibration for the first time was far beyond anything I had imagined. I pre-ordered my copy a long time ago and have been eagerly waiting for it to arrive. Hopefully it gets here soon! Has anyone else ordered this game? 😆

When Sony first announced that they were going to make a game console, I remember thinking, “Is that really possible?” At the time, Nintendo and Sega had already dominated the market for two generations, and NEC was also building a solid presence of its own. My biggest doubt was about first-party games. Even if they could build the hardware, it was hard to imagine a console succeeding without strong first-party titles. That’s why I always felt NEC was a step behind Sega and Nintendo. Now it’s already been over 30 years since the PlayStation launched—32 years this year—and I never would’ve imagined back then that it would rise to form a two-giant system alongside Nintendo. Looking back, there’s no doubt that Ken Kutaragi was an incredible figure for making PlayStation a reality. A lot of us have great memories with PlayStation, don’t we?

People who started playing games after the PlayStation era probably know the company Konami mainly through titles like Winning Eleven, Metal Gear, and Silent Hill. But Konami was actually a company that created a huge variety of games, from the arcade era of the 1980s all the way through the 16-bit console generation. Their work on 8-bit consoles was especially impressive. Konami did an excellent job of adapting many arcade classics to fit the limited hardware of 8-bit systems. Super Contra is a good example of that. Back then, there was even a saying that you could buy a game just by seeing the Konami logo and you wouldn’t be disappointed. 🎮
