The original PlayStation’s impressive 3D capabilities have somewhat overshadowed it over the years, but SEGA was actually a company that was deeply committed to 3D gaming from the very beginning. In arcades, they were producing 3D games on a completely different level from their competitors, and they were constantly... experimenting with new ideas on the home console side as well. If you look at the Mega Drive version of Virtua Racing, SEGA managed to bring over an arcade-quality experience by adding a special processor directly into the cartridge. Seeing that success, they likely realized that a dock-on device with its own dedicated hardware could allow the Mega Drive to handle 3D games—especially SEGA’s arcade-style 3D titles. That idea eventually became the 32X. At the time, the Mega Drive (Genesis) was incredibly popular in North America, so the concept definitely had potential. The problem was its timing. The 32X launched around the same period as SEGA’s next-generation console, the Sega Saturn, which created confusion in the market. If it had been released even a year earlier, giving players earlier access to games like Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, it might have achieved much stronger sales. When I heard Daytona USA was coming to the Sega Saturn, I sold all my other consoles and saved up for it. Finally got the Saturn and Daytona running at home—total mind-blow 🤯. Sure, it wasn’t quite arcade-perfect, but just being able to play it at home was enough. By the time Dreamcast came around, the port was almost flawless. Fun fact: Saturn was almost done as a 2D machine, but after seeing PlayStation’s 3D power, Sega tweaked it late—3D performance ended up a bit lacking. Irony is, the same Sega that pioneered 3D with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter thought consoles weren’t ready yet.

Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. Unlike hand-to-hand combat games, it features a weapon-based fighting concept similar to Samurai Spirits. For some reason, though, it lacked the level of polish seen in Sega’s other titles and failed to gain widespread popularity. However, the Saturn version of the game was well made compared to other ports and was received quite positively.

People who started playing games after the PlayStation era probably know the company Konami mainly through titles like Winning Eleven, Metal Gear, and Silent Hill. But Konami was actually a company that created a huge variety of games, from the arcade era of the 1980s all the way through the 16-bit console generation. Their work on 8-bit consoles was especially impressive. Konami did an excellent job of adapting many arcade classics to fit the limited hardware of 8-bit systems. Super Contra is a good example of that. Back then, there was even a saying that you could buy a game just by seeing the Konami logo and you wouldn’t be disappointed. 🎮

When Sony first announced that they were going to make a game console, I remember thinking, “Is that really possible?” At the time, Nintendo and Sega had already dominated the market for two generations, and NEC was also building a solid presence of its own. Because of its larger storage capacity, many arcade games were ported to it, and the CD-quality audio was absolutely amazing. The real issue, though, was the price. You had to buy everything separately—the PC Engine itself, the CD interface (docking unit), the CD-ROM drive, the system card, and the game CDs.

This is the Samsung Handy Gam Boy, the version of the Sega Game Gear that was imported and sold by Samsung in Korea. It’s one of the harder Samsung gaming systems to find, making it quite a challenge for collectors. Because of that, a fan produced a small batch of reproduction units. Even the box was faithfully recreated, and they went as far as reproducing the “Handy Gam Boy” branding on the console itself. I was never able to get an original one, so I’m really happy to have something like this to fill that gap in my collection. 😊

Developer Brian “Biscuit” Watson revealed that Sony once created a plug-and-play console shaped like a DualShock controller, with a PlayStation 1 built inside it.
