In Australia, under proposed national standards, new data centres must bring their own 100% renewable energy supply, firmed by batteries or gas. Crucially, this means new, additional renewable generation, not simply claiming certificates against generation already on the grid. And the scale is enormous. AEMO is already tracking 225 data centres in development, with data-centre electricity demand forecast to rise from around 3% of NEM consumption today to 13% by 2036, potentially around 34 TWh a year. Climate Change & Energy Minister Chris Bowen puts the challenge bluntly: “Data centres are huge consumers of electricity. They are whales.” In 2024, US data centres consumed as much electricity as the entire country of Sweden. Australia wants to get ahead of this. Australia isn't alone. Similar policy moves are underway in China, Germany and Ireland, but Australia's proposed framework is among the most aggressive: 100% renewable energy, tied to new additional generation and backed by firming, with the new rules intended to begin from 2027. Instead of allowing this enormous new load to compete with households and businesses for existing generation, Australia wants it to help finance the new supply needed to meet it. AI growth → electricity demand → renewable PPAs → new solar & wind → more batteries & transmission → stronger grid. My job is to communicate the facts, and that's what I do. 20 years ago, even 10 years ago, data centers in Virginia, where they started, used a lot of water and it caused prices to go up when it was attached to the grid. Well, you cannot attach the grid anymore. The Utah project contemplates bringing new power to Utah. All of the power will be created from nat gas pipeline that runs through there, and will give back to the community. It will generate enough power that some percentage of it will go back to the grid. If you want China to overtake our ability to develop cutting edge technology, you stop data centers. So that's the cause and effect of it all. If you want China to lead, take over our, let's call it democracy, our free speech, and the way we live with technology, just stop building data centers. It's that simple.

Not enough people are talking about what comes with it. Enormous power demands. Massive water consumption. Noise. Pressure on the grid. Environmental concerns. And in some cases, surprisingly few permanent jobs considering the sheer size of these projects. I'm not against data centres. They're obviously going to be part of our future. But before cities start rolling out the red carpet, residents should know exactly what they're signing up for and what the community is actually getting in return. That completely changes the conversation. Instead of being seen as “the evil data center guys,” we can help power Utah’s grid while also building critical AI infrastructure for the future. And despite the headlines, we’re not building the world’s largest data center overnight. We’re starting with just 1.5 gigawatts with 1 gigawatt of net IT load a small fraction of the long-term proposal and proving the model first. And it’s not a 40,000 acre data center. Our project a full build out will span 10-13k acres 7,500 of which will be preserved. We want the people of Box Elder County to come see it themselves, the EPA air quality standards, the water permits, the noise compliance, and how the project actually operates before anything scales further.$

In the US, cracks are showing, with property tax revolts like those that slowed the Californian growth machine. Housing, power plants, and data centres get blocked by neighbors who don't share in the upside. When they do share in it, as Loudoun County does with data centres, or as French communes did during the nuclear build-out, local residents become powerful forces in favour of development. I got a lot of my views on this from Judge Glock, so I invited him on the Works in Progress podcast to discuss why local government is the "missing layer" for cheaper housing, more energy, and better infrastructure.
