And in fact, The Kyiv Independent was saying it's not just the Europeans plus the Ukrainians against the Russians, it's the Ukrainians, the Europeans, and the Americans against the Russians. Some recent messages that are now broadcast to Russians: Russian propagandist Karaganov stated that the United States was the instigator of the war between Russia and Ukraine, but that it had already "begun to back away," while Europe was "whipping up military hysteria" and preparing for war. Do not be under any illusions that the Russian war against Ukraine is "Putin's war". Russian state propaganda has created a parallel reality in the minds of most of all Russians, where they are not the ones who attacked a neighboring country, destroying entire cities, kidnapping children and killing civilians every day. It's just like during World War II, where ordinary Germans said that Jews were doing well in concentration camps, and after losing and being taken to gas chambers to show what was happening there, they made excuses that "they didn't know." No, they, like the Russians, knew the terrible truth. Russians just convince themselves that it's not so and they are the good guys, and the Ukrainians are the bad guys. Only a military defeat for Russia will bring the bewildered Russians back to reality. And if Russia wins, it will only convince the Russians that their barbaric government is doing everything right and aggression and imperialism will only flourish...

Again, this does not sound like the Russians, and in particular Vladimir Putin, were bent on conquering all of Ukraine, winning a decisive victory. And in fact, what happens after 19th March in Istanbul is that the two sides do begin to negotiate, and it's very clear that there are a lot of difficult issues on the table, and it's not clear you would have ever gotten an agreement. But the central agreement on the table is the question of Ukrainian neutrality. And what was going on here is that the Russians just wanted to make sure that Ukraine did not join NATO. They were not interested in conquering all of Ukraine. They did not want Ukraine to turn into a Western bulwark on them on their border. And that's what this operation was all about. Almost impossible to sustain the story that the Russians were interested in conquering Ukraine. My final point on this is those negotiations eventually break down, and as I said, agreement that would have ended the war back then, but it's not the Russians who walk away from, the negotiations. I think it's the Ukrainians who bear the principal responsibility for walking away from the negotiations. And of course, what happens then, once, once the war is not settled in Istanbul, is it evolves into a war of attrition.

He honestly admitted that Kyiv is launching drone attacks on Russia to make life unbearable for Russians. According to him, Crimea is successfully being isolated from the rest of Russia by Kyiv, through drone strikes. Russians should understand that the situation is a deadlock and Kyiv is now launching attacks all over Russia. This is what the West and Kyiv are trying to instill in us. So I think that the Russians are in the driver's seat here, and all this talk in the West about how the Ukrainians have turned the tide campaign, much like the campaign that we hear vis-à-vis the war in Iran. You remember all the rosy stories that were told about how we were winning in, the war in Ukraine and how the Ukrainians are winning the war against Russia. These are just propaganda campaigns, and they bear little reality to what's happening on the actual battlefield.

President Trump gave Ukraine lethal weapons—javelins and stingers—that killed Russians and saved Kyiv as Biden was figuring out if it was an invasion or “just a minor incursion.” The strange part about Mehdi Hasan's argument is that he actually seems to agree with the current outcome President Trump has accomplished (basically putting the ball back in Putin’s court), but as a leftist, he just CAN’T give Trump credit for it.
