A couple of weeks ago the NTSB issued an update on the UPS MD11 crash and I wanted to use the graphs of flight data in a visualization combined with the ADS-B data and surveilance videos. This is what I ended up with, one hard part about this is the flight is so close to the ground the viewpoint needs to account for the pitch of the aircraft raising and lowering the cockpit.

JUST IN: Footage of the debris field of the F-35 jet has been released after it was located in a field in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. The crash site was about 80 miles from Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. The F-35 fighter jet appeared to run through a group of trees before crashing down in the field. In 2019, concerns were raised by the Pentagon of the possibility that the F-35 could be hacked. It’s still unclear what caused the crash…

Chile wildfire helicopter crash: The Pilot survived… Insane footage of the Bell helicopter that went down while doing bucket work in Chile this afternoon. #wildfire #aviation #bomberos Clearly a mechanical failure. Earlier this summer, U.S. and Canadian transportation authorities grounded a portion of the Bell wildfire fleet after a fatal crash was caused by rotor straps that failed during flight. Very concerning.

More information on the Russian ring-wing FPV, including a larger version apparently intended as an interceptor. They claim that the addition of the closed wing has tripled the range of an FPV to 50 km. The drones take off vertically and then transition to horizontal flight.

These days, it feels like it’s been absorbed into The King of Fighters series, but with the recent release of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, the legacy of Fatal Fury is finally continuing again. If you grew up in the arcade era, there’s a good chance you loved this series.

The death of the first flying wing On this day in 1948: USAF prototype Northrop YB-49 [42-102368] a flying wing jet bomber, crashes in California (US) all 5 aboard die. The aircraft had a structural failure on a test flight. Enquiry stated that the outer wing sections detached when pulling from a dive, likely after an intentional stall. Despite development work continuing for two more years, the YB-49 project would be canceled in the mid-1950s, in favor of more conventional designs. The flying wing concept only became practical with the advent of computers in the 1980s, with the B-2, whose advanced electronics compensated for the instability of the tailless aircraft. As a memorial to the victims, Forbes AFB and Edwards AFB are named in honor, respectively, of the pilot (Major Daniel Forbes) and copilot (Capt Glen Edwards) who perished in this crash. I remember this bridge scene in Funny Farm with Mickey and Crocker and I thought it was one of the funniest parts of the whole movie.... This was some of the earliest laughs in the film... They struggled to find the remote farmhouse, getting visibly frustrated and eventually dumping the couple's belongings in the wrong spot if i remember correctly...
