If you can put on both socks and both shoes while standing on one leg, your balance, hips, ankles and future self will thank you. One of the most underrated self-tests for healthy aging. Here are 7 reasons why 1. It exposes silent aging

1) It exposes silent aging You can still walk, work and climb stairs on two feet. One leg with busy hands shows the decline two feet hide.

2) It tests real-world balance Not a still pose. You have to hinge, reach, pull a sock and tie a lace without the other foot saving you. That is the balance that prevents falls later.

3) It checks hip strength The standing hip must hold your weight while the other side moves. Weak glutes and a dropping pelvis are why the foot taps down.

4) It demands ankle control The standing ankle makes dozens of tiny corrections. Stiff, unused ankles are an early mark of a body aging faster than the calendar.

5) It needs a true hip hinge You cannot just round the spine to the floor. Hips must sit back. Lose the hinge and dressing, bending and lifting all get harder with age.

6)It keeps independence cheap Sitting to put on socks looks harmless. It is often the first quiet handover from muscle to furniture. Furniture dependence is how later-life help begins.

7)It is trainable in weeks Failing is not a life sentence. Single-leg hinges, deep squats, one-leg stands and side-hip work rebuild the exact qualities this test asks for.

8) You don’t lose the ability to dress on one leg because you get older. You lose it because you stop using one leg. Practice the test next to a wall. Train the weak part. Your future self will thank you.

How to do the old man test: 1. Stand near a wall on a non-slip floor. 2. Place socks and laced shoes in front of you. 3. Lift one foot. 4. Without that foot touching the ground — sock on, shoe on, laces tied. 5. Only then put that foot down. 6. Repeat on the other side. Tap the floor or grab the wall and that side failed. Use the wall to learn. Do not call it a pass if you needed it. Avoid or modify if you have vertigo, a fresh sprain, an angry knee, or you woke up unsteady.

I havee had this habit since my 8th-grade NCC days. We were never allowed to sit while wearing shoes, and I took that as a rule. Btw, I m 36 years old now.🙂

The published version of this test is even simpler. Araujo and colleagues followed 1,702 adults aged 51 to 75 and reported in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2022. People who could not stand on one leg for 10 seconds had 84 percent higher all cause mortality over seven years, after adjusting for age, sex and health conditions. Socks are the advanced course.

I've been doing this by default for as many years as I can remember. I find this to be the best judge of how well balanced my body is.

I do

👌👍👏

At 60 I am just managing to fetch pass marks. Feeling of being an average student.

Inspirational

Weight of the person also matters to do this activity but weight # ageing necessarily.

What’s a good way to make it better ?

This person is orthopedic... Thirty casesof bone fracture after this post reported to him

Try the same with eyes closed

This guy must be an agent of hospitals, must be getting a commission for every person admitted with a fracture or injury trying this useless stunt

People with OA & Knee issues⁉️

You are struggling is what I see! It is better according to me to sit and do this rather than fall and be bed ridden for months.

Although it's never comfortable to do it, I test myself now and then doing it.

I try it everyday near a wall to stop fall

Lets check..

I do it at the age of 58 . It is just a practice and how we manage the weight of the body with proper balance. Those who can do it be happy. It doesn’t mean that you are super fit. All others who can’t do it , Don’t read too much of it and don’t worry .
