Do you read a lot of books but feel like nothing in your life has changed? If so do this: Every time you finish a chapter, write down 1 key lesson you learned and apply it within the week. Keep it simple and aim to apply one lesson at a time. Trying to apply too many lessons at once can get overwhelming and cause you to give up on all of them. Remember the goal of reading is knowledge application NOT knowledge acquisition. As Alex Hormozi says, "If you read something, and your behavior doesn’t change, it means you didn’t learn anything." What do you think about this reading tip?

Basically try to ingest as much information as you can and develop good general knowledge so you at least have a rough lay of the land of the knowledge landscape. Try to learn a little bit about a lot of things. How would you know what you’re really interested in if you’re not doing a broad peripheral exploration of the knowledge landscape? . . . Then try to find an overlap of your talents and what you’re interested in.”

He avoids new books and basically doesn't read anything published in the past 50 years. The problem with new books isn't that they're bad. The problem is that everybody else is reading them, which doesn't give you much edge as a writer. Why You Should Write 1) Putting words on paper freezes your thoughts, which gives your mind space to think deeper about a problem. 2) Writing lets you see if the epiphany you just had is brilliant or total bogus. 3) You want to attract smart people — because smart people read, and smart & successful people read the most. 4) For whatever field you're interested in, if you write about it well, the world's experts will reach out to you. 5) The higher you climb, the more likely you are to write frequently. Every serious executive I know is a voracious reader. Or, as former American president Harry Truman once said: “Not all readers are leaders but all leaders are readers.” 6) Writing accelerates your learning. If you want to understand a topic better, start teaching it. The act of putting ideas into your own words tattoos them into your mind. James Clear once wrote: "If you think you can learn a lot by reading a book, try writing one." 7) The investor Howard Marks once said to me: "In writing, as opposed to speaking, you can't BS. This month and every month make sure you take care of your mental health. Every morning I wake up and tell myself it’s going to be a great day. Then I hit the gym, even 15 or 20 minutes if that’s all I have, because I know if I do that, I’ve already accomplished something before the day really starts. Watch what you put in your brain too. If you fill it with garbage, it starts reacting to the world through a garbage prism. Practice gratitude by telling the people around you that you love them. Getting two or three real things done at work. And every so often — disappear for three days. Read a book, go to a spa or just stare at a wall. You have to take care of the mind. Nobody else is going to do it for you.

I agree with Jay Dyer. Most people simply don't ready anymore. David Wood Dr. David Wood recently admitted that if a book is more than like 200 pages he wouldn't read it. Jay actually asked me for book recommendations prior to our debate and delayed the debate so that he could read a particular book before our debate. Here are some of the books I read in preparation for my debate with Jay. Admittedly, I haven't read every single page of these books. However, I've read many of them cover to cover and key parts in others that were related to our debate.

This was awesome. I got the opportunity to describe to Rick Rubin how I make Founders podcast: “Steph Curry was asked: What do you think of when you're taking a shot? And he said: Absolutely nothing. I’ve had people ask me how I choose what to highlight. What are you thinking of when you're doing this? And my response is: Nothing. I just read and if something jumps out to me I don't think at all, I just underline it. And then I'll go back through and reread all my highlights. And if that part is still interesting, it was interesting the first time, now it's interesting the second time, it's probably interesting to other people. There's 10 million mes out there. I'm not unique. And there's no way that if I read this line twice and found it interesting that if I read it on a podcast that somebody else is not going to think it's interesting too. If I overthink it or if I think of “oh this person might hear it” or “oh this many people will hear it” that gets in the way. I'm thinking of nothing.”

Jayne Anne Phillips just won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel called "Night Watch." She’s written six books and founded the Rutgers-Newark MFA Program and this episode is all about her approach to writing. Some lessons below: 1. It's strange what you don't forget. Those things are a key to who you are and what really matters to you. 2. “When I’m writing, nothing is going through my head.” 3. Your job as a writer is to listen to the work itself because it'll tell you what to write next. 4. Every novel teaches its reader how to read it. It’s a unique world with its own rules, rhythm, relationships, and way of perceiving reality. 5. Writing is fundamentally about perception, and it's the author's job to show the reader how they perceive the world. 6. What's unique about children is the way they formulate their own conclusions by looking for truths that are truer than the ones they've been given. 7. We are creatures of narrative. We think in terms of words and in terms of images. 8. Small towns are webs of secrets beneath the surface: There's always a world underneath the world, and children hearing adult conversations know this better than anyone. 9. Jayne tells a story: “Someone said to me once: 'When I read your work, I don't feel as though I'm reading about something. I feel as though I'm inside it.' That is exactly what I want the reader to feel." 10. Find your writing allies. Some will be living writers, others will be dead ones, but no matter what, it’s worth reading all their work. 11. Language is like music. Every word is a different note, and the best way to find the flat notes is to read your writing out loud. 12.
