I was happy to receive the "Outstanding Higher Education Stalwart of the Year" award for 2024 from The Economic Times (Economic Times) last night in Delhi. Of course, there is still so much to do. I returned from the US in 1998 to join IIT Bombay (IIT Bombay) as a faculty member. After 25 years in the IIT system (18 years as a faculty member in IIT Bombay and 7 years in IIT Delhi, of which 6 years as the Director of IIT Delhi), I am now with the BITS Pilanii as a group Vice Chancellor since March 2023. All these three institutions happen to be the Institutions of Eminence (IoE) as recognized by the Ministry of Education Ministry of Education, Govt of India. #IIT Delhi received the #IoE status during my time as the Director IIT Delhi following a highly competitive process. Higher education needs major structural #reforms in India. We are archaic when it comes to managing our best institutions. While Public institutions are dependent on Govt of India for 90% of their funding, Private institutions are dependent on tuition fee for 90% of their sustenance. Both are flawed #financial #models. We need to develop a #diversified financial model where endowments, overheads on research and tuition fee contribute an equal share. It requires major #policy tweaks. We need to seriously look at Study Now-Pay Later kind of models on the lines of Australia's HELP scheme. American higher education funding models burden the students with #debt. So much needs to be done in this space in India. Without a proper financial model in place, our institutions are totally at the mercy of bureaucrats and politicians. State #universities are already on their knees and it won't be long before the same happens with our centrally funded Institutions. Industry is the bridge between #research (generation of knowledge) and #innovation (utilization of knowledge for public good). With India ranked 66th among the 130 countries when it comes to academia-industry collaborations, it's clear what we need to do to promote innovation. It's again the Government which needs to make favorable policies for promoting #academia-#industry collaborations. Hope to see some of these #reforms taken up by the new government.

Hyderabad-Based Call Centre Dupes US Citizens; Telangana Cyber Security Bureau Busts Racket A Hyderabad-based call centre involved in defrauding US citizens was busted by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) following a raid at a Madhapur building on Wednesday evening. According to TGCSB Director Shikha Goel, the operation was led by Kaivan Patel and Rupesh Kumar alias Jaddhu from Gujarat, with assistance from Rupesh’s brother Vickey, based in Dubai, and another associate, Azad. The prime suspect, Chanda Manasvini (36), had established a company, Exito Solutions, and rented a floor in the building to run the call centre, which employed 63 people, including 40 from Northeastern states. Employees were offered a monthly salary of ₹30,000, along with transportation and accommodation. The scam involved tele-callers posing as PayPal representatives, falsely informing US citizens of unauthorized transactions in their accounts. Victims were tricked into sharing sensitive information, which was then used to siphon funds into designated bank accounts. Each caller was tasked with duping at least 10 people daily, targeting an average of 600 victims, leading to the theft of thousands of dollars. The stolen money was later converted into cryptocurrency and transferred to other digital wallets. Authorities believe some individuals provided PayPal customer data to Chanda Manasvini, enabling the fraud. “All tele-callers were fluent in English and trained to manipulate victims. They were aware their activities were illegal,” said an official. During the raid, police seized 52 laptops, 63 mobile phones, and 27 employee identity cards. Those were the sentiments echoed by one protester as Jamaicans gathered in downtown Kingston on Monday, urging citizens to put country before politics and demand greater accountability from those in power. Organisers said the demonstration was intended to give ordinary Jamaicans an opportunity to voice concerns over governance and transparency, with participants carrying placards and chanting for change throughout the protest. As part of our commitment to mitigate water issues as well as addressing untreated waste water being dumped into Arabian Sea, KWSC is proceeding at a fast pace on constructing the 35 MGD waste water treatment facility at Haroonabad (Gutter Bagheecha). We are hopeful to have the project operationalised by 30th August 2025. Thereafter, we will be working towards tertiary treatment of the water for industrial use. This project is a major milestone both in terms of mitigating water issues as well as protecting our marine life #KarachiWorks
