Today, we spent some time in Pretoria West to collect what is owed the city: property and services. Several buildings in this area owe us over R60 million for rates and services. In addition, we found several illegal connections. We’ve disconnected electricity, removed illegal connections and removed water meters from all the bad buildings we inspected today. Every week, our Bad Buildings Committee, led by Kholofelo Morodi, identifies buildings that are hazardous to this city. City of Tshwane

City Power removes 3 tonnes of illegal cables in Kew: City Power, working with JMPD and SAPS, conducted an electricity enforcement operation in Kew, Johannesburg. Teams removed an estimated 3,000kg of illegal aluminium cables, worth about R200,000. Properties at 131 and 133 10th Road were disconnected after illegal connections and unregistered meters were found. City Power says illegal connections, cable theft and vandalism are placing severe pressure on Johannesburg’s electricity network. The operation forms part of a wider intervention following concerns raised in Alexandra, including overloaded networks, illegal connections, meter bypassing, cable theft and vandalism. City Power says it pays about R250-million a month for electricity supplied through the Alexandra network, while only about R29 million is recorded as revenue. An Alexandra Electricity Imbizo will be held on 18 August at 10:00 at the AlexSan Kopano Resource Centre. Residents are urged to report suspicious activity and electricity infrastructure theft.

We’ve disconnected all the illegal connections. The tenants are billed monthly for water and electricity, but those funds aren’t paid to the city. We closed a few businesses in Moreleta Park. They were operating without training licenses and some had no operating health and fire certificates. Residents of Tshwane, our by-laws should treat every business equally, in townships and suburbs. What was concerning in our oversight was finding big chain establishments such as Checkers and Pick n Pay who did not have valid operating licenses. We closed down Asia House, A Fish Takeaway restaurant and Pizza Baby. City of Tshwane
