Today, we took a tour of the University of Pretoria’s Moja Gabedi Community Engagement Hub in Hatfield. The land where the hub is located is City-owned and used to be an illegal dumping site. The University of Pretoria partnered with the City of Tshwane and took over the space transforming it into an urban agriculture and community engagement hub. The area offers space for research gardening, picnics and meeting centres. Moja Gabedi is an example of the remarkable outcome of the City of Tshwane’s Adopt A Space Initiative. City Power removes 3 tonnes of illegal cables in Kew: City Power, working with JMPD and SAPS, conducted an electricity enforcement operation in Kew, Johannesburg. Teams removed an estimated 3,000kg of illegal aluminium cables, worth about R200,000. Properties at 131 and 133 10th Road were disconnected after illegal connections and unregistered meters were found. City Power says illegal connections, cable theft and vandalism are placing severe pressure on Johannesburg’s electricity network. The operation forms part of a wider intervention following concerns raised in Alexandra, including overloaded networks, illegal connections, meter bypassing, cable theft and vandalism. City Power says it pays about R250-million a month for electricity supplied through the Alexandra network, while only about R29 million is recorded as revenue. With this week’s storms, California is taking advantage of opportunities to capture and store water that supports the state’s long-term water supply goals — made possible through strong partnerships between the state and local agencies. These collaborations are central to Governor Newsom’s California Water Supply Strategy, Adapting to a Hotter, Drier Future, which focuses on expanding the state’s ability to capture water from winter storms and adapt to increasingly extreme weather driven by climate change. Across California, projects like these are helping turn stormwater into a resource: •The Lower Elkhorn Basin Levee Setback Project consists of seven miles of new levee, set back about 1,500-feet from a pre-existing levee. Completed in October 2023, the new levee expanded bypass capacity to increase the level of flood protection to the urban Sacramento area, and it created a beneficial habitat for native fish. This project was identified in the 2012 and 2017 Central Valley Flood Protection Plans. (Check out the Dec. 19-26 time lapse video here!) •The Lookout Slough Tidal Habitat Restoration Project is another important project with a specific floodplain component. The flood sirens have gone off in the Upper Valley this afternoon due to a combination of heavy rain and snow melt. I have spoken to the Environment Agency and Calderdale Council. Current predictions suggest it is likely to get worse until about 3:30 – 4:00pm and then ease. This is being monitored and I'll update as the day progresses. There is surface water flooding on Halifax Road at Eastwood where a crew are working to unblock drains, surface water flooding at Callis where the road is closed, and a flood warning in Walsden. Other areas including Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, and Todmorden are under flood alerts and teams are out clearing drains. Please avoid travelling to these areas. Residents should put up flood defences if possible. You can get flooding updates on or the Environment Agency website. Flood wardens also update on a number of local Facebook pages including Todmorden Flood Group and Hebden Bridge Flood Action Group. We are at the frontline of climate shocks here in Calder Valley. Rest assured I will continue to raise the issues we face with flooding at the highest levels of government.

Today in Zaporizhzhia, fourteen people were injured following a Russian strike. The rubble clearing continued throughout the day, and two people were rescued. Aerial bombs were dropped on ordinary residential buildings and city infrastructure. Additionally, Russian forces carried out strikes with guided bombs in the Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Sumy regions. In Hlukhiv, several residential buildings were damaged. In the Kharkiv region, apartment buildings, energy infrastructure, and medical facilities were hit. This is the daily terror Ukraine faces. Russia is using around a hundred guided bombs each day against Ukraine. This is a constant reminder to all our partners who can help—that Ukraine needs more long-range capabilities, more air defense systems, and stronger sanctions against Russia. During this past week, in various discussions in the U.S., our position and arguments were heard in full detail. So that any further questions are unnecessary.
