I'm delighted the government has accepted my amendment to make hate crimes against LGBT+ and disabled people aggravated offences, and will now table an amendment in the House of Lords to make it happen. Here's a bit of my speech on why this change is so important:

Hate crimes against transgender, gay, and disabled people ruin lives and leave whole communities living in fear. From now on, hate against these groups will be treated as seriously as hate crimes based on race and religion.

So everyone apart from the straight people ? What about if a member of the LGBT+, is shouting in the face of a heterosexual, because they are heterosexual ? Is that not a hate crime too ?

All Identity-based aggravated factors must be abolished. If two perpetrators commit the same crime with identical levels of malice, there is no rational reason for one to be more severe simply by the virtue of identities. This is a mutilation of justice.

What if a Muslim commits a hate crime against LGBT ? Will LGBT be charged and imprisoned for upsetting a Muslim? Or if an LGBT will violate a sharia law - will a Muslim be jailed for upsetting an LGBT?

General Secretary of the Free Speech Union, Lord Young of Acton, asked the Justice Minister in the House of Lords to guarantee that at least people accused of speech crimes have a right to a jury trial, which is such an important bulwark of free speech. She declined. Trial by jury is a cornerstone of English liberty — especially free speech. David Lammy’s plans amount to the biggest assault on our liberty in 800 years. If the Government were serious about reducing delays and the court backlog, they’d stop creating so many new criminal offences -- 65 in the Crime and Courts Bill alone. If Lammy gets his way and jury trials are scrapped, you’re far more likely to be banged up for hurty words. We cannot let this happen.
