Had similar thought yesterday

Programming is the same as writing anything - the more you micromanage it, the less intelligent it becomes. Nobody is surprised that megacorps don't write good novels yet for some reason people pretend like they solved this problem for software. Authorship is individual.

Agree completely, you need to enjoy coding for the sake of coding or you will hate life. One of my roles forced me from coding in something I loved to a full rewrite in Java. I left the company a year later, cause every day of using Java made my life more miserable.
