the law of leaky abstractions grows more important by the day

Well said it's important to learn the low level to better use the high-level

"I'm not asking you to be like water. I'm asking you to KNOW ABOUT water" - Bruce Lee, talking to a plumber

Back in college, the language I enjoyed programming most was assembly, for a course on microprocessors and drivers. Everything is done very precisely and is very satisfying

Interestingly enough. I think I got this awareness with programming in C. However it is possible that I might be missing some stuff by not diving deeper with something like Assembly.

I mean, you just need to have a basic understanding of memory layout. When you say assembly people just run away in horror

I struggled with Java in university because I was memorizing code without really understanding how it works. Learning C helped everything click. Now other languages make more sense. Assembly might take that even further. Great idea!
