Google is the latest US tech company to warn about the threat the Online Safety Act poses to free speech. The Free Speech Union long warned the government about the dangers the Act would pose to UK citizens — and those overseas. No one can seriously claim there is a political or ideological motive behind Google raising concerns about censorship. The Online Safety Act has already censored Katie Lam MP’s grooming gangs speech in Parliament, a story about Richard III, and — ironically — Spiked’s documentary on censorship. Ofcom, the regulator, is now talking about censoring “potentially illegal content” — a new category not included in the Act, and one which Google points out was never intended by Parliament.
