Democracy is a luxury only developed countries can afford. Any nation that still has lots of developmental work to do will remain poor as long as it still employs constitutions, “good governance”, “checks and balances” and other rich people’s bs of that nature. No country has ever developed by unleashing democracy on its economy and none ever will. Every country that has ever made it economically started by suspending or ignoring democracy and by weaponising what they now call “corruption”. It may not be pretty, but it’s the only way. Of course, it’s not guaranteed that authoritarian developmentalism will work, a lot can go horribly wrong. But democracy will most definitely not work. Yes, it might keep the status quo humming along, but that’s it. In short, authoritarianism is a gamble and democracy is a guarantee—of mediocrity. Just look at South Africa. Duma Boko is finding out this crucial fact of life in real time.

And I agree with them, because in a democracy, 51% of the people control 49% of the people. If you're part of the 49%, you're not free. America was founded as a constitutional republic, and in that constitutional republic that we have, 99% of the people can't take away the rights of 1%. You have your rights because you were born with them. You have God given human rights that nobody can take away from you—the government, the majority, no matter who they are. I can't take away your rights. And that's what our founding fathers gave us. We are tribal and we are disconnected. 3 things would actually fix it. 1. End gerrymandering. In a democracy the people are supposed to pick the politicians. What we have now is politicians picking the people. 2. Massive campaign finance reform. End the separate but equal democracy where money buys legislation. Hard to do because these politicians love the money, but it has to happen. 3. National service. Whether people like the idea or not. George McGovern a staunch Democrat and Bob Dole a staunch Republican got along because they served in the US Army together. They fought in the Second World War side by side. In 1985, 85% of Congress had served in the military. When people share something that hard and that real, the tribalism breaks down. We’ve lost that connective tissue entirely. We need to find a way to reknit this country before it’s too late.
