But like every other technology, it's advanced dramatically. Today, we don't use a lot of water in data centers because it's a closed loop system like your car, your radiator. It stays inside a system. Many turbines now don't use water at all, they’re air-cooled. This narrative about data centers destroying the environment is an old story, and it's being used by those that don't wanna see this advance. We just need more capacity. We have to build it more responsibly, and that's exactly what's going on now. So this narrative is mostly a falsehood. And I think I know who's spreading this falsehood by the way. They're not our friends.

If you look at the cost of solar power five years ago, 10 years ago, or 20 years ago, it would have seemed cost-prohibitive. But the cost of solar power today is extremely low. The cost of batteries to store that energy has also dropped dramatically. Battery storage costs have fallen by a factor of 10 in the past five years. So many of the studies that were done were done in times past, when batteries were very expensive and solar power was very expensive. I would just encourage everyone to take another look at the cost of solar and the cost of batteries. I think you’ll find that you’re pleasantly surprised. Elon Musk

I think I'm the only guy doing this that graduated from environmental studies. I was one of the first cohorts in the late '70s. And what they told us that understanding the value of sustainability, water and air rights, indigenous rights, and making sure the constituencies understand what you're doing is going to be more valuable than the equity you raise. They were right!

Everything she's saying there is a false accusation on datacenters. So let's just go one by one.” POWER: So she's saying that they eat up all of the power. Well, yeah, if you connect to the grid without producing more power and you force datacenters to compete with residential ratepayers, then yeah, you could drive up utility prices. However, if you do what Chamath said and let them build behind the meter, then they bring their own power. And that's what the president has advocated for since the beginning of his administration, is let the AI companies become power companies. So that is the way to solve the energy problem or the utility problem. LAND: Then, she's talking about eating up land. The reality is these datacenters are a model of land use efficiency. We have a ton of land in this country, obviously. NOISE POLLUTION: The supposed noise pollution, that's largely made up. That can be dealt with. You realize you have to go to space and you can't scale very much on Earth. All of the United States currently uses only half a terawatt per hour on average. So you know, if you say a terawatt, that would be twice as much electricity as the United States currently consumes. So that's quite a lot. It's actually very difficult to build power plants and then you don't just need the power plants, you need all of the electrical equipment. Need the electrical transformers to run the transformers. You can build power plants. That's what we did at xAI for Colossus 2. It's very difficult to scale other forms of power. You can scale potentially solar. Solar cells are already very cheap. Now put it in space and it's 10 times cheaper because you don't need any batteries. So the moment your cost of access to space becomes low. By far, the cheapest and most scalable way to generate tokens is space. It's not even close. It'll be an order of magnitude easier to scale five years from now. My prediction is we will launch and be operating every year more AI in space than the cumulative total on Earth."

We have to give the economic benefit to them, around 10,000 jobs in the first gigawatt in construction, then 2,000 jobs to maintain it. High-paying engineering and support jobs. They really matter. There's lots of rumors that we're going to suck the Great Salt Lake dry. That's ridiculous. Of course that's not gonna happen. In fact, if anything, we'll be adding to the Great Salt Lake because the water rights on that land will be used and one of the hyperscalers even said to us, "Let's use air cooled so there's no water involved." There's lots of different optionality here, but the rhetoric around that site is just a lot of misinformation

My job is to communicate the facts, and that's what I do. 20 years ago, even 10 years ago, data centers in Virginia, where they started, used a lot of water and it caused prices to go up when it was attached to the grid. Well, you cannot attach the grid anymore. The Utah project contemplates bringing new power to Utah. All of the power will be created from nat gas pipeline that runs through there, and will give back to the community. It will generate enough power that some percentage of it will go back to the grid. If you want China to overtake our ability to develop cutting edge technology, you stop data centers. So that's the cause and effect of it all. If you want China to lead, take over our, let's call it democracy, our free speech, and the way we live with technology, just stop building data centers. It's that simple.

When people say data centers use millions of gallons of water, they're describing an old technology. Before, water went into evaporative cooling towers. Warm water pulled heat off the AI chips, then evaporated into the air to shed it. It was effective, but it burned through fresh water continuously, which is where the headline numbers come from today around "data centers use a massive amount of water." The data centers we revealed at Build today don't work that way. The cooling loop is closed. Water is added once during construction and recirculates indefinitely between the servers and the chillers. No evaporation, no fresh-water resupply! Satya put the scale in plain terms: a full year of water use is roughly what a single restaurant uses. Keep in mind that for us, every liter and every watt is an optimization target. The economics and the environment push in the same direction!

I think the fact is there are only going to be four or five of these companies that are able to raise the billions required to build the infrastructure to support these models. It's a global competition, and particularly against the Chinese right now because they're trying to beat us on AI, because the country with the best AI is gonna win all the wars. That's what's gonna happen. I think at the end of the day you want diversification in your portfolio, not just one stack. For me, I'm playing the picks and shovels. I'm building energy because you need energy for this stuff, and I'm building data centers. Now, there are different things, but right now we need more electrical power in this country beyond just data centers. We just need power because we got a booming economy.
