@kerkonian @GaroGhazarian1 This genocide is the result of a failure by sucessive Armenian govts to prepare for drone war, and now weak capitulation encourages Aliyev. Ironically, I discussed the need to break the illegal blockade using drones months ago, but the govt didn't react.

During a Q&A session today, National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan was questioned by Artsakh journalist Anna Mekunts about the future of Artsakh Armenians and his choice of terminology when referring to the region. Mekunts asked Simonyan when she and others could return to their homeland, Artsakh. “When it is safe,” Simonyan responded. She then pressed him on why he refers to the region as “Karabakh” instead of Artsakh. “Don’t you say ‘Karabakh’? Don’t you say that ‘we are Karabakhtsis, Karabakh Armenians’?” Simonyan retorted. “I am a politician, and I oppose any foreign citizen calling one of my cities by a Turkish or Azerbaijani name. I must uphold a politician’s ethics.” When reminded that he had previously called it Artsakh, Simonyan admitted, “I was making a mistake.” The exchange escalated when Simonyan accused the people of Artsakh of not staying and fighting during Azerbaijan’s September 2023 attack. “When you left, it wasn’t safe. But you could have stayed and fought to the end. Yet, you left,” he said, repeatedly insisting, “You should have fought.” His comments sparked immediate backlash, given the overwhelming military disparity and the mass displacement of over 100,000 Artsakh Armenians following Azerbaijan’s full-scale assault. Notably, on September 23, 2020—just days before the Second Artsakh War—Simonyan, then an MP, posted a photo on Facebook with the caption: “Berkaber Artsakh. Aknan (now under Azerbaijani occupation) is my homeland…” His remarks today raise further questions about the Armenian government’s stance on Artsakh’s future and its accountability for the region’s loss.
