JUST IN: Trump Seeks to Punish Canada for Wildfire Smoke Canada doesn’t want the smoke. Not from President Trump and Republicans who are seeking to punish it for wildfire fumes that are covering America’s northern border. President Trump and Republican lawmakers are now ramping up pressure on Canada as smoke blanks parts of the Midwest and Northeast. T Hundreds of wildfires are burning across Canada, sending smoke into several U.S. states and triggering air quality alerts, event cancellations, and health advisories. In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Canada of failing to properly manage its forests. "We are holding Canada responsible," Trump wrote, calling the situation "willful negligence" and arguing the annual smoke is costing the United States billions of dollars. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) is also pushing legislation that would sanction Canadian officials deemed responsible for the wildfires, revoke their visas, and explore a compensation fund for Americans affected by the smoke. "Thanks to Canada's failed leadership, Ohio's skies are seeing the worst pollution on record," Moreno said. "We will not tolerate this incompetence."
