From 1831 to 1963 the Post Office kept revising abbreviations — some 3 letters, some 4 — until ZIP codes came along and forced them to save space. A century of committees… to spell “California” as “CA.” 🇺🇸💡

Did you know that zip codes were implemented only as recently as 1963? It was the Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) aimed at improving the efficiency of mail deliveries in response to the nations growing population. I can’t even imagine how chaotic it was to deliver mail before this!🤯
