Karen Hao just revealed that laid-off workers are being hired to train AI on the exact job they were fired from. A marketer gets laid off. They take a data annotation gig. They teach the model how to do marketing. The model learns. The next layoffs come. The cycle repeats. Here's the story: Hao interviewed 300+ people for her book Empire of AI. Data annotation is now one of the fastest-growing categories on LinkedIn. The people doing it are not who you'd expect: - PhD and law school graduates - Doctors who can't find clinical work - Award-winning Hollywood directors annotating in secret to feed their kids Hao says these jobs are "way worse than the jobs that were there." They "break the career ladder" from the middle out. A New York Magazine investigation followed one woman in the system. She said the work was "mechanizing my life, atomizing my work, devaluing my expertise." She said she had "become a monster." Vinod Khosla on why he does not really prefer "AI co-pilots". Because he thinks "humans get in the way of co-pilots", which slows everything down and blocks real change. He says workers like accountants and programmers do not actually want co-pilots, because they feel their jobs are at risk and then resist using the tool properly. So instead of “helping” them, he prefers building AI that fully does the job itself, like a complete software engineer. She got the firing story scene by scene from people in the room. Ilya Sutskever was OpenAI's chief scientist and co-founder. He cared about two things: building AGI, and building it safely. He came to believe Altman was undermining both. Sutskever told the board Altman was: - Pitting teams against each other - Telling different things to different people - Creating an environment where no one could trust anyone Mira Murati, then CTO, brought the same concerns to the board independently. The independent board members began comparing notes. They asked themselves: if this was Instacart, would Altman's behavior warrant firing him? Maybe not, they concluded. But this is not Instacart. In Sutskever's own words: "I don't think Sam is the guy who should have the finger on the button for AGI." The board fired Altman without telling Microsoft, employees, or investors.
