In celebration of Pride, we’re remembering those that came before. Our video scrapbook today is dedicated to the men of the war years. For thousands of gay men, World War II served as an unintentional, massive coming out experience. For the first time ever, this “great awakening” allowed homosexuals...

From the very beginning of this country, before there was even a United States of America, there were men willing to stand in the cold, shoulder a rifle, and risk everything for an idea. Not riches. Not comfort. Not fame. Freedom. In the winter of 1776, the Continental Army stood barefoot in the snow at Valley Forge. Farmers, blacksmiths, laborers, and young boys who had barely left their hometowns suddenly found themselves facing the most powerful empire on earth. Many of them didn’t have proper coats. Some didn’t even have boots. But they had something stronger than any weapon ever forged. They believed liberty was worth fighting for. Those men became the first American soldiers. From that moment forward, every generation of Americans has answered the same call. When the young nation was still fragile, American soldiers defended it during the War of 1812. When the country tore itself apart during the Civil War, hundreds of thousands fought and died in one of the most painful chapters in our history. Then came the world wars. In the trenches of World War I, American soldiers crossed an ocean to defend freedom on foreign soil. But World War II would show the world what American soldiers were capable of. Young men from farms, ranches, and cities across the country left their homes to face tyranny head on. They stormed the beaches of Normandy, fought through frozen forests in Europe, and battled across the Pacific. Many never came home. Those soldiers didn’t just defend America. They helped save the world. And when they returned, many quietly went back to building families, communities, and the strongest nation the world had ever known. And the story didn’t stop there. In Korea and Vietnam, American soldiers fought through unimaginable hardship. In the decades since, new generations have stepped forward to defend the country, serving in distant deserts, mountains, and bases far from home. They miss holidays. They miss birthdays. They leave behind the people they love. And yet they still step forward. Because someone has to. American soldiers come from farms, small towns, city streets, and classrooms across this country. They grow up like everyone else, dreaming about their future. But one day they raise their right hand and swear an oath to defend a nation they love. America exists today because generation after generation of soldiers were willing to carry that burden. Every folded flag handed to a grieving family tells that story. Every quiet salute from a veteran remembering friends who never made it home tells that story. And the American people have never forgotten. We respect them. We honor them. We thank them. And millions of Americans pray for them every single day. Because from the frozen ground of Valley Forge to the battlefields of the modern world, one truth has never changed. American soldiers have carried the weight of freedom on their shoulders. And a grateful nation will never stop honoring them.

I just wanted to share what has been on my heart all day. I know we are all thinking about the hostages, their families, and the families of the murderers who are being released in this deal. Their suffering is immense and unfathomable – I pray for them every single day. However, today, all I could think about all day was our soldiers in the IDF. Seeing the videos and pictures of them leaving Gaza, and the beautiful messages their commanders wrote to the men, I became very emotional. These men, these boys, have taken the brunt of this war on their backs. They have fought with a tenacity and ferocity that fills my heart with pride to be a Jew. While others suffer in their souls, our boys bled. They bled in the hundreds. They were above politics, above lies and dishonesty, above everything except the mission. I look at them now, I think of all the ones who didn’t come back. I think of all of our purest souls who fell in their prime – our flowers who were taken us before they could blossom. I look at the men who are coming out of Gaza and I know that no matter what – we will achieve victory. Make no mistake, the ONLY reason any of these hostages are coming home is because of the sacrifice and warrior spirit of the IDF. They didn’t bend, they didn’t break, they didn’t bow, they fought like lions. In them, I see the strength of David HaMelech, I see the spirit of Moshe Rabbeinu. Some wore Kippot and Tzitzit and some didn’t. They came from all over Israel, from different families and different backgrounds – but they all came together to fight. Today, and every day, I salute them. Israel is alive because of them. Israel will live because of them. We will live because of them.
