Illegal sewage outfalls are a major issue on the River Roding, as they are around much of the country. The EA has not brought any prosecutions for illegal sewage discharges on the Roding this century. In 2022, I discovered an illegal sewage outfall on the Aldersbrook discharging raw shit into the river. I reported it to the EA, who did absolutely nothing. I then had to campaign in my spare time for 3 years to get the outfall fixed, attending meetings with the council & Thames Water & dealing with journalists. Eventually, the campaign worked & Thames Water spent £1 million fixing the outfall. Subsequently, I realised that the EA had no idea where all the illegal sewage outfalls on the river were, or which were most harmful. I therefore went out on the river myself with a bucket, in a pair of waders to find & analyse all the illegal outfalls on the river. I found dozens of them, spilling over a billion litres of raw sewage illegally into the river every year. I have given the exact locations of all the illegal outfalls to the EA & they’ve done sweet FA. Raw sewage continues to pour into the river illegally & unchecked every minute of every day of the year, & parts of the river are now ecologically dead, as well as having e-coli levels more than 250 times the safe limit.

There is of course another side of Thames Water 💧's relationship with the Hogsmill River, one of only two urban chalk streams in London. Yep that is Epsom storm tanks dumping sewage into the river, a chalk stream. How's that workout with the water voles do you think?

Count Binface’s policy of making water company bosses swim in polluted rivers might sound ridiculous, but is actually far more effective as a response to the sewage crisis than anything Reform is proposing. There are lots of places I could take the bosses of Thames Water 💧 to on the River Roding, as we have dozens of completely illegal sewage spills to choose from. I think the ideal spot would have to be the Cran Brook though. It’s convenient to get to: just 15 minutes walk from an Elizabeth Line Station & Ilford town centre where hundreds of thousands of people live & work. But that doesn’t stop Thames Water constantly dumping 750,000,000 litres of raw sewage into the Roding via this brook every single year, whilst refusing to commit to our fair demand to stop all spills by 2030. I guess they might say it’s unsafe to swim in a cocktail of raw shit, cooking fat, toilet tissue & chemicals? But if this water is too unsafe & disgusting for them to touch, surely it’s not safe to discharge into our river? In trying to be silly, has Binface actually hit upon an eminently sensible policy that most people in Britain would support?

The Environment Agency crisis comms swings into action ahead of the first episode of ‘Dirty Business’ tonight with the usual mix of gaslighting, cover up and half truths. They say they “act on breaches of environmental law”, but on my river, the Roding, there are dozens of illegal outfalls, spewing over a billion litres of raw sewage into the river every year and the Environment Agency has not brought a single prosecution this century. Not one! The evidence is not hard to find- many of these outfalls have been reported by the public for decades and run through parks & major population centres. There seems to be actual policy in place to just ignore rampant criminality, although we cannot say if this policy springs from inertia, incompetence, corruption or a mixture of all three. So that the EA cannot say I’m making this up, I’m going to post pictures, locations and data measurements from illegal outfalls on the Roding. First up is the Cran Brook. Running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at least 25 litres a second and ammonia concentrations of 5-7 PPM, this river is arguably the most polluted river in London, spewing 750 million litres of sewage & landfill leachate directly into the Roding, here:

In a shocking revelation, it has been discovered that a private builder, a prominent real estate developer in Pune, has been clandestinely dumping untreated sewage into the Ram River since 2021. The magnitude of this environmental transgression has reached alarming proportions, with over 10 million litres of sewage having been recklessly discharged into the river. The modus operandi involves Rohan Madhuban, a high-end society in Bavdhan Khurd with over 330 flats and nearly 1000 residents. Despite the absence of a functional Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) within the society premises for several years, the builder has persistently managed the sewage treatment process. I am currently at home in Busia. This is Busia Sewage treatment plant in Mauko Farmview Burumba ward that has been left to deteriorate over the years. Back then, when I was a young kid, this was a beautiful scenery. We used to come here and relax. We also took our village salads for a picnic here. South of the plant is a stream that pours down to river Suo with pours to river Nzoia then to the great Lake Victoria. This is a health hazard to my people. North of the plant Ruto is building affordable housing that will pour its sewer here. It is my request that the sewage plant be renovated and sewer treated. William Samoei Ruto, PhD angalia hii maneno.

This video reveals what appears to be sewage flowing into water on Southend seafront. The footage was captured on Sunday. The area of darker coloured water was spotted by a man in an aircraft who labelled it “disgraceful”. Mark Hutley said: “I’ve never seen anything like it. It could be seen for miles.” It was spotted between Chalkwell beach and Westcliff beach. The apparent sewage spill is close to one of Anglian Water’s ‘storm overflow’ pipes that leads into the water from the land. Latest records indicate that it was active on Sunday 8 September and emptying into the area of the Thames Estuary for a period of time. Anglian Water have a permit from the Environment Agency to operate the storm overflow pipe, which specifies conditions for controlled sewage and stormwater spills during heavy rainfall. This is in order to prevent flooding in homes and businesses when the sewer network becomes overloaded with rainwater.

This is on the Ohio River in Cincinnati near Route 8 You see the color of this water being dumped into the Ohio River? It’s pink…. It’s coming out of the Newport Pumping Station The City sometimes injects colored dye into drains and sewer to watch where it emerges to map flows and or study river dispersion This could be that, or this could be something else being dumps directly into the Ohio River…. The EPA should be checking this out to verify

Imagine Building SEVEN massive dams for irrigation, fishing and hydropower before the River reaches entry to NFD at Tula wells in Isiolo, Garissa Town, Tana River County to Lamu County. What we (the hosting community of Majority of the river) get back in return? FLOODS caused by opening the gates of their dams downstream once they have enough water for the Year! Such historical marginalization by Jomo Kenyatta needs to be addressed.

An historic day, as the River Wye becomes the first river in the UK to have its rights recognised by local authorities across its catchment. Hundreds of people gathered on the banks of the river to watch as representatives from Monmouthshire, Forest of Dean & Powys Councils, Herefordshire County Council, the Wye Valley National Landscape & Bannau Brycheiniog National Park signed the pledge recognising the rivers rights and then spoke about why they had done so what it would mean for the relationship of their organisation to the river. It went beyond legal formalities into something of a service of thanks & honour to the river, with poetry, a choir singing songs, & offerings to the river. It has been a real honour to witness & be part of the surging movement towards river rights & guardianship on the Wye. Four years ago I met & advised Herefordshire Councillor Elissa Swinglehurst, who wanted to put a voice of the river on the Wye Nutrient Management Board. A year ago I sat around a fire on the banks of the river with other Wye guardians & Earth lawyers as the idea of a charter was first mooted. To see it become a reality, & supported by 6 public bodies, in just a year is astonishing. Now, of course, comes the hard work of making those rights a reality. But given the hundreds of active river guardians, & increasing public pressure to protect & restore the river, if it can be done on any river, it will be done on the Wye.

The EA has allowed invasive species like Himalayan Balsam to spread out of control, with no plan whatsoever to even contain this damaging plant, let alone eliminate it from our river. Every year that the plant is allowed to spread, the problem gets worse & harder to solve, with the rare marshes along the river now at seriously damaged & risking destruction. Local volunteers have stepped up to act where they have failed, organising small groups on WhatsApp to take responsibility for different sections of the river & destroy as many of the plants as possible before they set seed. Over this last summer alone, there have been dozens of events, where volunteers have walked & waded along the river to laboriously remove these plants. The EA has offered us no support whatsoever in this massive & important task.

When they say China thinks long term, this 👇 is a perfect example: we're in Dujiangyan in Sichuan province, a massive irrigation project constructed in 256 BC that's still very much in use today, making it literally the longest-serving infrastructure project in human history. The project was supervised by the Qin kingdom (before it became the Qin dynasty, the dynasty that first united the whole of China) and was about dividing the Mingjiang river in two and createb a new river to irrigate the Chengdu plain for agricultural purposes. To this day, that artificial river created from here is the main water supply for what's now the city of Chengdu and its surroundings!

Zimbabwe declared a state of emergency in its capital city, Harare amid a deadly outbreak of the medieval disease, cholera. What you are seeing below is raw sewage flowing in the streets of Harare due to an unserviced old sewage system left by the colonial government. This is what happens when political leadership fails a country and focuses its energises on looting public funds and plundering the country’s natural resources. This level of total collapse is not only tragic, but it is now bringing diseases for Zimbabweans, yet their public health system is totally collapsed! The most painful thing is that part of Rhodesia’s propaganda predicted this, imagine working so hard to prove Ian Smith right. Yet you see the ruling political elites in designer suits and being driven in the latest black Mercedes cars yet sewage is flowing in the streets like this! For telling you this self evident truth, I will be called a Western puppet and whole trailer load of insults. The insults don’t matter in the face of this truth, like George Orwell said, “….perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood.”

Had a good walk and run at Tholkappia Poonga, the eco park created within the 358 acres Adyar River estuary. This stretch, known as the Adyar Creek, is one of the last remaining natural wetlands in Chennai ,a fragile ecosystem on the coramendal coast that once supported diverse bird (migratory) and aquatic life. Years of urbanization and pollution had severely degraded the creek. The Adyar River Restoration Trust,by Gov of TN, has been doing phased restoration over the years. One only wishes to see both rivers fully restored with River fronts from their source to the end. Entry is limited and requires an online pass. It would be great if the park opened at 5:30 a.m. instead of 6:30 am. Overall, a much needed green space with crumbling city infra no walkable pathways.
