Republican Oklahoma City, OK, Mayor David Holt said that “mayors are certainly caught in a little bit of an impossible situation” with federal law enforcement in cities. “When the federal government and federal law enforcement comes into your city, we are fully subservient to that in the eyes of the law, and we also believe in the rule of law. So, we get caught kind of in the middle of these tensions, and we need a federal government who will use discretion and restraint with that power,” Holt said. He added that he’s “encouraged” by signs of a tactical “pivot” by the Trump administration.

United States Attorney Bill Essayli joined me to discuss his decision to arrest two SoCal medical workers on federal charges of interfering w/ ICE. “The politicians in California have emboldened people to stand up to ICE, they think it’s okay to interfere or obstruct,” Essayli said. “We’ve said this over and over again, if you get in our way, if you lay a hand on a federal agent, you will be arrested and you will be charged.” I asked if these federal charges are too heavy handed for these medical workers? “No, it’s the opposite,” Essayli told me. “We have to charge these cases. We have to set an example. We have to enforce the rule of law. Federal agents are off limits. Do not touch them.” (The at-large female worker was arrested after this segment).

D.C. has seen an increase in National Guard and federal assets, and we asked the local manager at DCity Smokehouse what his views on the increase in federal patrols. They actually complete their training at the same giant federal facilities where other agencies like the Secret Service, DEA, and Marshals train. As for the law, their authority to investigate and make arrests for immigration crimes falls under these two federal statutes, sections 1226 and 1357. But because they are sworn federal law enforcement officers, they also have broad Title 18 authority. Title 18 being the the general code of federal criminal laws in the US. And this is a big point of misunderstanding for people. A lot of people think that ICE only has authority for immigration related offenses. Federal officials are reportedly narrowing in on Becca Good. “The federal investigation… is focusing more on Becca Good, including what officials said were her possible ties to activist groups, and less on Ross’ actions when he fired into Renee Good’s vehicle during an immigration operation last week,” NBC reported.
