In light of recent events, I’m thinking about the First Amendment and how religion needs to present itself as a peaceful contributor to civil society. One condition for religious freedom is that believers seek to participate in the public square without recourse to violence.

Freedom of Religion or Belief: A Fundamental Human Right Freedom of religion or belief is a fundamental human right guaranteed by international conventions and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Every individual has the right to hold, practice, express, and peacefully propagate his or her religion or belief, openly and publicly, without fear, intimidation, or discrimination. In this 21st century an era defined by technology and social media individuals, groups, companies, organizations, and both governmental and non-governmental bodies freely utilize digital platforms to create awareness, educate the public, and broadcast their programmes and values. Religious engagement and propagation in the public space have therefore become a normal and accepted part of modern society. In this same spirit, we, the Muslims of South-Eastern Nigeria, affirm our lawful and peaceful right to practice and propagate Islam. We should not be silenced, intimidated, threatened, or attacked for carrying out our legitimate religious activities in a peaceful and responsible manner. Our faith teaches wisdom, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence, and this remains the foundation of our engagement with society. We strongly reject all forms of harassment, threats, hate speech, and attacks targeted at Muslims or any religious group. Such actions undermine social harmony, violate fundamental human rights, and threaten peaceful coexistence in our diverse society. We therefore say no to intimidation, no to threats, and no to attacks. We also say no to religious bigotry, intolerance, and discrimination. Freedom of religion or belief is not a privilege granted to a few; it is a right owed to all. Mutual respect, understanding, and the rule of law must guide our coexistence in a pluralistic society.

Kemi Badenoch disaster of an interview criticising the Ramadan Tent Project's Iftar at Trafalgar Square is something to behold 😅 Ramadan Tent Project did it without objection under 4 Conservative PMs: 2015 under David Cameron 2019 under Theresa May 2022 under Boris Johnson 2024 under Rishi Sunak Gary Gibbon, "What is your objection to the Muslim prayer that happened in Trafalgar square" Kemi Badenoch, "As a woman from an ethnic minority background, I do not like to see women shoved to the side, segregated, in an event that is not welcoming to others" "Trafalgar square is a public space which we use for inclusive events" Gary Gibbon, "But the event was welcoming. It was inclusive. It was inviting other people to come and see what the moment was like" *Badenoch's eye lashes flash faster than a butterfly chasing nectar* Kemi Badenoch, "A segregated event like that, I do not think the Mayor should be party political" Gary Gibbon, "So gender segregation is your objection?" Kemi Badenoch, "Yes, but more than that" Gary Gibbon, "But lots of religions have gender segregation" Kemi Badenoch, "Not in public spaces. This is not about freedom of religion" Gary Gibbon, "The Ramadan Tent project organised events at the Victoria & Albert museum, in front of the Royal Albert Hall, under Conservative administrations" "They've been developing this public way of showing their faith and inviting people to come and observe it" Kemi Badenoch, "Without knowing the details of those events, I'm not making a comment" "I'm taking a specific event about that type of mass prayer, segregating women in the middle of Trafalgar square" "We believe in religious freedom, that doesn't mean any religious practice in every single religion" "Sometimes the authorities need to set guard rails and say actually this is too much"
