In the last 18 months or so my terminal use has exploded. From being a place where I mostly navigated the file system, ran a server and did some very light nvim use, to my entire workspace, connected to multiple machines, where I spend most of my day. This... is the starting point we're using for designing the Superlogical multiplexer, and we're borrowing ideas from another app that blurs the local and remote, long lived sessions and throwaway tabs: the web browser. And the first thing I wanted to borrow: favicons, for your terminal apps. We call it the Deck icon (like a deck of cards), since it needs to represent your own layout of (potentially) multiple running processes.show more

@superlogical Sir I beg you for stacked panes. One of the biggest problems with many multiplexers that really only Zellij got right is that there are often processes I just need tucked away somewhere in a drawer, to check back on occasionally.

@superlogical Absolutely agree. Do you prefer stacking over floating panels? If there a case when you use both?

Yes I use both a lot! I tend to favor floating panes for two things: - A shell for random stuff. Often I will *only* have a shell prompt open in a floating pane. - Ephemeral background tasks like a long-running test suite or typecheck if I’m doing it manually. Stacked panes are typically dedicated to server logs, which I’ll have going all day, lazygit for a project, Vim, etc. I’ll often then have an agent open in a split as my primary focus. I’ll usually have one tab of these setups per project. All of this said, things are changing fast and flexibility is really the most valuable thing here.

@superlogical Also: I’m a huge fan of Zellij’s modes, because it makes binding keyboard shortcuts much easier. If I enter pane resize mode, it means I can just bind left/right resize to h/l.

I use tmux everyday since few years. And one thing that I'm very used to (apart from the common stuff) is the detached sessions and being able to jump between them really fast without spawning a new terminal. My use case is: I have two tabs in one session which has my editor, and a scratch space for builds and stuff. And I have other two tabs in the other session that has my agent and lazygit for diff view. I jump between tabs with Ctrl+a - l, and jump between sessions with Ctrl+a - L. Having customizable keyboard shortcuts is also very important to me.

Love the browser framing. What I notice in my own tabs: with a dozen of the same site open the favicon stops doing the work and the title takes over, because that's the part that moves with state. A deck of agent sessions hits that fast. Is the Deck icon meant to carry state too?

Absolutely, @dizzyup said the same in a discussion we had about it earlier. I think title / mini-previews and grouping will be the ui that will help us with tab sprawl. Of course, with AI on device we can also do clever "catch up"-type UI, smarter titles, auto workspace creation etc etc. A lot of fertile ground.

@dizzyup Mini-previews solve the identical-tab case a title can't. The one I'd want next to it is urgency: which session is blocked on me right now. With agents that's most of the waiting, and the audio dot is the closest thing a browser has to it

that’s the point: they look like native tabs, consuming and wasting a lot of horizontal space. It should be opt-in if somebody asks me.

tbh not impressed or maybe its just bad showcase (why all most ppl can show is open btop and neofetch xD) I doubt you need more then 2 terminal windows (or nvim) apart form 'to look cool'...

I personally find that when you have a lot of concurrent windows that the tab view can very busy. I really like how Arc or Herder handles this with the workspace concept with a collapsible vertical bar

Thoughts about a pinned pane? I’m thinking about the future of agent monitoring à la Herdr. If I could have a persistent list of agents on the left and have that switch tab/pane focus, that would be a powerful paradigm without you having to bake in agent monitoring yourself.

So far, I haven't seen anything better than Warp Terminal @warpdotdev. I started using it back in 2022 and still haven't stopped. Yeah, it evolved from a simple terminal into an AI tool, adding a bunch of extra bloat, but it's still the best simply because of its convenient input, where you can select text just like in a regular text editor - for me, that's still the most important feature.

Never really understood the tabs thing in terminals. I full screen a new terminal for each project and just swipe between them. Any reasons tabs get so much usage that I'm not seeing?

the terminal comeback is so real. it stopped being "where i run a server" and became the whole desk. wild how fast that flipped once agents could actually do stuff in there
