❓ IS 3I/ATLAS RAPIDLY SPINNING ❓ The short answer? Of course not. I've been trying to avoid addressing this YouTuber directly because I know the cult will come for my comments, but I'm tired of getting messages about it and seeing people base entire arguments about 3I/ATLAS on this single false premise. Simply put, Ray does not understand what he's looking at in this video (and many others). The changing appearance is due to simple atmospheric distortion. I'll explain below: All light that we observe from the ground here on Earth is subject to atmospheric distortion regardless of the source. Think of how the air looks "wavy" over pavement on a hot day. Same concept. Different sources of light result in different effects (e.g., stars emitting light twinkle, while planetary bodies reflecting light do not), but it is all distorted in one way or another. Now, we know Ray is using a 14" telescope. Depending upon his eyepiece, that means the FOV in his images is likely somewhere between 40 and 90 arcminutes. The current estimated size of the coma of 3I/ATLAS is 2.2 arcminutes. In all likelihood, the visible part of the coma in Ray's images is even smaller than this, but in all of the math I am going to give him the benefit of erring on the side of caution. Why does any of that matter? This means it occupies a tiny fraction of the total FOV of the telescope. Even if we give him the smallest FOV and the largest coma size, it's still a mere 5% of the total image. Now, telescopes do not have a magical optical zoom feature. Any zoom is done digitally with all degradations of quality involved in doing so. This extreme zoom also means that small atmospheric distortions are heavily amplified. So, when Ray captures an image every 60 seconds (or really any interval since he isn't stacking), he is capturing the atmospheric conditions in a slightly different position. Again, think about the "wavy" air above pavement on a hot day and how it is constantly moving. It's the same concept. The Earth's atmosphere is in constant motion. This is what causes the image to look different in every single frame. In fact, you will never find two of Ray's frames that look identical ever. In any video. So let's assume for a minute that you don't believe in atmospheric distortion for whatever conspiratorial reason. Let's examine what he is claiming on its face. In order for you to believe Ray is correct, and his video is actually showing movement of the anti-tail and coma and not simple distortion, this means you have to believe that TENS OF THOUSANDS of kilometers of dust, gas, and other ejecta are simply disappearing and reappearing every few seconds. The anti-tail is an estimated ONE MILLION kilometers long. You would have to believe that a 1 million km long structure is shifted nearly instantaneously without leaving so much as a trail. And this isn't even accounting for the tens of thousands of kilometers of dust and gas randomly disappearing and reappearing from all sides of the coma at random. I don't think Ray is a bad guy and I think he means well. I think he has a super cool rig and was learning how to decipher the images he was capturing when he was suddenly thrust into the spotlight and did the best he could. But enough is enough at this point. 3I/ATLAS is NOT rotating every 60 seconds or whatever other nonsense is being proposed based on Ray's observations. The "scientists" and "PhDs" out there who don't understand simple physics about Earth's atmosphere and the movement of planetary bodies need to quietly see themselves out of the conversation or do some reading and come back more informed. 🚨NEW: The Symmetrical Jet Puzzle of 3I/ATLAS New Hubble data adds another layer to the 3I/ATLAS story, and it’s not a small one. As Avi Loeb outlines, processed images from the Hubble Space Telescope reveal an evolving jet system that looks unusually structured for a simple icy body drifting through the Solar System. On large scales, the picture looks familiar enough, a dominant anti tail jet pointing back toward the Sun, stretching nearly 100,000 kilometers. That part fits within known comet physics. But zoom in closer down to about 24,000 kilometers and things start to get really strange. Three distinct inner jets appear, separated by almost perfect 120 degree angles. I have to admit that symmetry is really difficult to ignore. If these jets are driven by sublimating ice pockets on a rotating nucleus, you'd expect irregularity. Instead, we see a near textbook division of 360 degrees into thirds, with the whole pattern slowly rotating over time as the nucleus spins. The reported rotation period of roughly 16 hours can explain the short term changes in the smaller jets, but it struggles to explain the long term stability of the much larger anti tail. For that longer jet to stay so narrow and so well defined, the rotation axis of the object would need to be closely aligned with the direction of the Sun. We're talking about a misalignment of less than about six degrees. Statistically, that kind of alignment has a very low chance of happening at random, on the order of a few tenths of a percent. Granted, none of this proves anything exotic on its own. Gas dynamics can be weird, and nature does produce edge cases. But taken together, the triple symmetry, the scale separation, the alignment geometry, this is not a run of the mill interstellar visitor. It's another reminder that 3I/ATLAS keeps landing right on the boundary between "rare but natural" and deeply puzzling. Whether this all collapses into a clever comet model or ends up forcing a rethink is still an open question. 🚨3I/ATLAS and the Sunward Jet Problem Science Wants To Ignore As of today (Dec 14, 2025), 3I/ATLAS is 270.5 million km from Earth. What we're seeing right now is already 15 minutes old that's the light/time delay at this distance. On Dec 19, it reaches closest approach to Earth at 269.9097 million km which is close enough for precision science and close enough for anomalies to matter. The latest image captured Dec 13, 21:30 UTC by Teerasak Thaluang using a 0.26 m telescope in Rayong, Thailand shows something that still hasn't been properly addressed, the anti-tail that is pointing toward the Sun, that's not normal. Anti-tails can appear in solar system comets as a brief illusion when Earth crosses the comet's orbital plane. But that explanation does not apply here. 3I/ATLAS showed this same sunward facing glow in the first Hubble image (July 21, 2025) at 2.98 AU and the second Hubble image (Nov 30, 2025) at 1.91 AU. Thousands of images have been taken between those dates, different geometry, at different distances, but all showing the same anti-tail feature. Gas and dust should be blown away from the Sun by radiation pressure and solar wind, that's basic comet physics. Yet 3I/ATLAS consistently shows a sunward directed jet. Curiously, this was not even mentioned at NASA's Nov 19 press conference. Three scientific papers written by Dr. Avi Loeb attempt to explain it. Two peer reviewed studies (with Eric Keto) suggest the glow comes from sun facing ice fragments. These particles evaporate before radiation pressure can push them back, preventing a conventional tail from forming. A third paper (published Dec 8, 2025) proposes something more unusual. A swarm of lagging material, left behind as 3I/ATLAS experiences non gravitational acceleration away from the Sun, confirmed by JPL Horizons data. New Hubble analysis may decide which explanation survives. The key point being made here is that anomalies are where discovery lives, if you chose to ignore them, and you don't get safer science, you get incomplete science. 3I/ATLAS keeps presenting us with questions.
