The incident happened at East 82nd Street and South Drexel Avenue in Chatham. While Chicago police officers were conducting an investigatory stop at the location, a suspect fled into a nearby apartment building, CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling said during a a.m. news conference Friday. The officers pursued the suspect into the building, where they encountered a different suspect who was armed with a rifle, Snelling said. The suspect fired the rifle, and an officer also shot their weapon during the incident. A 36-year-old female officer was shot and was taken to the University of Chicago hospital in a squad car, officials told ABC7. She later died due to her injuries, Snelling said. The deceased officer's name was not yet released. She was with the department for four years at the 6th District and was a mother, Snelling said. Multiple people were taken into custody after the shooting, Snelling said. Charges are pending as police investigate. No other injuries were reported. A large police presence could be seen by ABC7's crews near the location of the shooting late Thursday evening. The children killed ranged in age from 1 to 14 years old. Police confirm that “all of the deceased in this case are juveniles.” The perpetrator was killed by police after he carjacked a car, was chased by them, and they shot him. He was the father of at least some of the deceased and the only person police believe to have shot the children. In each case, she said the people carrying them were convicted felons who never should have had guns in their hands. She also warned that there have been “at least 11 times” when ShotSpotter detected gunfire in Cambridge and not a single 911 call came in. He tied the timing directly to what came next: "Keep in mind, it is about two days after all of this that Trump comes out with that threat of saying he's going to end an entire civilization, and 12 hours later he agrees to a ceasefire." On the deeper cause of the collapse, he pointed to the Tomahawk numbers: "The U.S. lost more aircraft that weekend than it has since Vietnam, 12 in total. Was there ever a U.S. interest that warranted this war? The answer is absolutely clear, there never was." He wasn't buying the headline numbers on the Hormuz fee reports rattling markets: "I've seen a lot of reporting coming out of Reuters that's been highly questionable.
