In the Sonic 1 prototype, there lies unreferenced data for another demo. It involves Sonic slowly walking to the right, jumping once, then running for the rest of the demo. Peculiar, isn't it?

This data also exists in all revisions of the final game, every version of Sonic 2, and the 1103 proto of Sonic 3. Seems to have stuck around for quite a while.

We can't spill the beans about the release date of Maki: Paw of Fury, but make no mistake, things are happening! 🫘😎 We remind you that the game is coming to #NintendoSwitch and #PC #Steam and you can play the demo on PC, here ⤵️ >>> Have a great day!

My dumb ass thought this was some EXE shit 💔

Happens to each one of my posts. I would never do such a thing.

how tf does something like this survive in a code base for nearly 3 years

The unused victory jump animation remains even up to the latest version of the engine (Sonic & Knuckles Collection, 1997).

1/2 Sonic Team expected players to go slow the first time through levels - this demo is likely a relic of that idea. An excellent example of this philosophy in the final game is Marble Zone 2 - Here's my recordings (left ones are "first timers", right ones "Expert")

Maybe this was a demo in Tokyo Toy Show 1990?

Ah hell nah, Sonic got stuck in “Hill”

The level layout was modified to show the demo input easier. It is not possible to tell what the real layout this demo was intended for was.

My guess is this has to do with the very early prototype with the TGS welcome sign. Sonic has notorious collision issues early on, and this might have been the hedge looping auto demo. Something guaranteed to work, but not show much of the actual gameplay.
