B-52H Crash at Edwards AFB. 8 souls. This was a B-52H Stratofortress assigned to the 412th Test Wing, and multiple reports indicate it was one of the Air Force’s dedicated test aircraft involved in the Radar Modernization Program (RMP) flight test effort. The aircraft was carrying a mixed crew of military personnel, government civilians, and contractors on a radar test mission when it crashed shortly after takeoff. From a test pilot perspective, the crew size is notable. A normal operational B-52H crew is five, but there were eight personnel aboard, which strongly suggests this was a developmental test sortie with additional flight-test engineers, contractors, or instrumentation specialists riding along. A very tragic day for the test community. Edwards, TPS, Boeing, and the bomber folks are a very small world. Eight souls lost on what should have been a “routine developmental flight”. When the Germans advanced towards Moscow in 1941, Soviet troops were in a nearly hopeless situation because they lacked effective anti-tank weapons. Out of desperation, highly trained military dogs were used to destroy the enemy.... In the early years of World War II, Soviet anti-tank dogs posed a major threat to the German advance. Strapped with explosives, these animals were sent on missions to destroy enemy equipment. While today this fact might seem disturbing to animal rights activists, it's important to remember how desperate those times were, when a formidable and evil enemy was almost at the Kremlin gates. Machine guns on German tanks were too high to reach the low-running 'suicide' dogs, and thanks to cover from Soviet infantry the Germans couldn't easily emerge from their tanks and shoot the dogs with rifles. German tank units often stopped their attack if they saw tank destroyer battalions with dogs on the battlefield. The only effective method to prevent such an attack was to use flamethrowers. Often, when German forces went on the offensive, they shot all dogs along the way. Even Luftwaffe planes opened fire on them. The Soviet Union didn’t start using anti-tank dogs in response to the Nazi invasion of 1941. In fact, they began training such dogs in the 1930s, well before the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. The anti-tank dogs were trained to crawl under enemy tanks while carrying explosives on their bodies (12 kg of TNT). A long lever set off an explosion upon contact with the target. The dogs were instructed how to climb under tanks. They were starved for several days, and pieces of meat were placed under practice tanks to fool the dogs into thinking that food could be found under all tanks. They were also taught not to fear heavy artillery, and were trained to crawl under the back of a tank to avoid fire from enemy machine guns. The first anti-tank dogs were introduced into the Red Army in 1939, and two years later the dogs were put to the test in battle. Anti-tank dogs from the 1st special battalion (212 dogs and 199 trainers) were first deployed in battle near Moscow. The dogs' first major attack was a complete disaster because there was no cover from Soviet infantry. As a result, the Germans easily shot the dogs. In addition, the trainers had made a serious tactical error by training the dogs with Soviet tanks, which ran on diesel. The animals were accustomed to the smell of diesel, but German tanks used gasoline. Thus, the dogs were completely confused on the battlefield. Those soldiers who weren't killed, surrendered with their dogs. During interrogations, the captive trainers revealed Soviet methods used to train anti-tank dogs. Even though the 1st special battalion was wiped out, the Soviet Union continued to use dogs against the Germans. Tactics were changed and dog training resumed. By the end of 1941, over 1,000 dogs were fighting on the front and the next year the number exceeded 2,000. On July 21, 1942, suicide dogs helped determine the outcome of a major battle near Taganrog on the Sea of Azov. When 40 enemy tanks smashed through a battery of anti-tank guns and compromised the position of the naval infantry brigade, the 4th company of anti-tank dogs was the only thing that stood between the command post and the Nazis. Simultaneously, 56 dogs launched an attack and destroyed many enemy tanks. Not only did those dogs stop the offensive, but they also forced the Germans to flee the battlefield. During the Siege of Leningrad, a group of dogs blew up enemy tanks and fortifications. They had slyly made their way around barbed wire, identified the enemy’s location and ran towards the entrance of the bunkers where they had detected human presence. They managed to blow up several bunkers, as well as an ammunition depot. #archaeohistories

Out of desperation, highly trained military dogs were used to destroy the enemy.... In the early years of World War II, Soviet anti-tank dogs posed a major threat to the German advance. Strapped with explosives, these animals were sent on missions to destroy enemy equipment. While today this fact might seem disturbing to animal rights activists, it's important to remember how desperate those times were, when a formidable and evil enemy was almost at the Kremlin gates. Machine guns on German tanks were too high to reach the low-running 'suicide' dogs, and thanks to cover from Soviet infantry the Germans couldn't easily emerge from their tanks and shoot the dogs with rifles. German tank units often stopped their attack if they saw tank destroyer battalions with dogs on the battlefield. The only effective method to prevent such an attack was to use flamethrowers. Often, when German forces went on the offensive, they shot all dogs along the way. Even Luftwaffe planes opened fire on them. The Soviet Union didn’t start using anti-tank dogs in response to the Nazi invasion of 1941. In fact, they began training such dogs in the 1930s, well before the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. The anti-tank dogs were trained to crawl under enemy tanks while carrying explosives on their bodies (12 kg of TNT). A long lever set off an explosion upon contact with the target. The dogs were instructed how to climb under tanks. They were starved for several days, and pieces of meat were placed under practice tanks to fool the dogs into thinking that food could be found under all tanks. They were also taught not to fear heavy artillery, and were trained to crawl under the back of a tank to avoid fire from enemy machine guns. The first anti-tank dogs were introduced into the Red Army in 1939, and two years later the dogs were put to the test in battle. Anti-tank dogs from the 1st special battalion (212 dogs and 199 trainers) were first deployed in battle near Moscow. The dogs' first major attack was a complete disaster because there was no cover from Soviet infantry. As a result, the Germans easily shot the dogs. In addition, the trainers had made a serious tactical error by training the dogs with Soviet tanks, which ran on diesel. The animals were accustomed to the smell of diesel, but German tanks used gasoline. Thus, the dogs were completely confused on the battlefield. Those soldiers who weren't killed, surrendered with their dogs. During interrogations, the captive trainers revealed Soviet methods used to train anti-tank dogs. Even though the 1st special battalion was wiped out, the Soviet Union continued to use dogs against the Germans. Tactics were changed and dog training resumed. By the end of 1941, over 1,000 dogs were fighting on the front and the next year the number exceeded 2,000. On July 21, 1942, suicide dogs helped determine the outcome of a major battle near Taganrog on the Sea of Azov. When 40 enemy tanks smashed through a battery of anti-tank guns and compromised the position of the naval infantry brigade, the 4th company of anti-tank dogs was the only thing that stood between the command post and the Nazis. Simultaneously, 56 dogs launched an attack and destroyed many enemy tanks. Not only did those dogs stop the offensive, but they also forced the Germans to flee the battlefield. During the Siege of Leningrad, a group of dogs blew up enemy tanks and fortifications. They had slyly made their way around barbed wire, identified the enemy’s location and ran towards the entrance of the bunkers where they had detected human presence. First fire! 🔥 We have successfully kicked off the hot fire campaign for our first stage at SaxaVord Spaceport UK. We hot-fired a total of four Helix engines, igniting one by one at four second intervals. All engines ran simultaneously for 8 seconds with a total hot-fire duration of 20 seconds. The test ran flawlessly through start-up, steady-state and shutdown. With this hot fire, we were able to demonstrate that we can nominally operate and control our first stage and all its systems, as well as a cluster of Helix engines. RFA and our incredible team are marching steadfastly on towards our first test flight, not only in Scotland but also in Augsburg, Portugal and Sweden. Some Big Numbers To Get Excited About Regular readers will know I often write of frustration at not moving fast enough. This mission I am on is really hard and sometimes it can seem impossibly big when I am down in the weeds dealing with dog issues on a daily basis. I have to say though that writing this tonight and looking through some numbers I feel for the first time that I am starting to make some large scale progress… A Second Island 🌴🥥 I live and help the dogs on the island of Koh Samui. There is an island of equal size called Koh Phangan just across the water. You probably have heard of it as the home of the world famous Full Moon Party. They have a similar problem with street dogs. Since the the 1st May I have starting funding a wonderful foundation called PACS to sterilise dogs there. They are starting with 50 this month. This is going to stop 1000s of future puppies. A big step. 90,000 Meals Served in 2023 So Far 🥘👨‍🍳 The cooking never stops. The dogs are all starting to benefit from a consistent and healthy meal per day. All the food is prepared in a central kitchen and handed out to volunteers to feed their dogs. With 5000 meals served per week around the island it blows my mind that soon we will serve the 100,000th wholesome plate of food in 2023. It wasn’t that long ago I was driving around on my moped with a 10kg bag of dry food feeding a paltry 20 dogs per day on my own. 7 Puppies Re-Homed 🐶🏠 In the last couple of weeks there have been 25-30 puppies show up. It can be incredibly tough to find them homes but thanks to a great Thai lady I have been able to get 7 into their forever homes around the country. It has involved a lot of vet visits, 1000kms of travel and lots of expense but that is 7 dogs who have a future now who wouldn’t have made it otherwise. 2 Miracles For Lady 🙏😊 The first miracle for Lady was the fact that she got off the street and was able to start walking a little again despite her two broken hips. We’ve been getting her a lot of treatment and she is thriving. Her 2nd miracle was when a lovely newly retired gentleman called Jamie spotted her and offered Lady a forever home to live out her life right here on the island. Nobody usually wants old and sick dogs so this incredibly selfless act is the huge slice of luck that Lady deserved after all the suffering she has endured. The Best Day Of Tina’s Life 🐕🥰 Tina was used for breeding puppies. We all saw the horrendous state she was in when she was rescued. Last week she was well enough to be sterilised so as she never has to have another puppy in her life again. It might seem like a small footnote in the bigger scheme of things but it was a moment of closure for this wonderful lady who has suffered so much. She can now just focus on being a dog for for the first time in her life and sharing all the love she has to give. Tina was the 521st dog I have sterilised since starting. King Whacker Of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✈️ Whacker is a very special dog who was one of the first arrivals back in November. Someone had tried to kill him with a pick axe. After recovering he turned into a true gent and is the big boss at the land. I promised he would never have to go back on the streets and this week after a process to find him the right home he got the news that he will be heading to Glasgow. Long live Whacker, the King of Scotland. 125 Dogs To Be Sterilised In May ✂️🐕 I spoke about how abstract sterilising can be for many people to understand but it is what will save the most dogs from suffering. In all of 2022 I was able to do 302 dogs. In the month of May alone I have a minimum target to fund 125. In June I hope to take that to 250 dogs for the month. Not easy and very expensive but I’m putting the groundwork in place to scale this up. Nothing is more important. Little Rodney was in getting the snip last week as one of the dogs this month. 7 European Dogs 🇪🇺🛫 By the end of June there will be 7 dogs who have traveled to Europe. Lottie, Hope, King Whacker, Rodney and Moritz will join Little Squeak and Peaches who just arrived in Germany. I can’t explain how hard it is to figure all this stuff out and get the processes in place. I’m focusing on Europe now as it is the easiest for travel and paperwork but the rest of the world will happen soon too. It’s only 7 dogs but seeing them in their homes or about to travel makes me so happy and proud for them all. Progress The suffering I see on a daily basis for street dogs means that I am never really happy with the speed and progress of my mission. I just want to help them all immediately but that isn’t possible. Having said that, reading this update and knowing what else is coming in the pipeline makes me feel that I am making genuine progress. Between food, funding sterilisations, medical care and re-homing dogs I can genuinely now say I’m helping 100s of dogs per month but also stopping the suffering of 1000s in the future. As I always say I could never do any of this without the online support and good wishes of everybody on the mission with me. I don’t feel like I am alone doing this. My role is to make sure I don’t waste all the support and ensure I think of ways to move faster and execute accordingly. A lot done, a lore more to do. With 5000 meals served per week around the island it blows my mind that soon we will serve the 100,000th wholesome plate of food in 2023. It wasn’t that long ago I was driving around on my moped with a 10kg bag of dry food feeding a paltry 20 dogs per day on my own. 7 Puppies Re-Homed 🐶🏠 In the last couple of weeks there have been 25-30 puppies show up. It can be incredibly tough to find them homes but thanks to a great Thai lady I have been able to get 7 into their forever homes around the country. It has involved a lot of vet visits, 1000kms of travel and lots of expense but that is 7 dogs who have a future now who wouldn’t have made it otherwise. 2 Miracles For Lady 🙏😊 The first miracle for Lady was the fact that she got off the street and was able to start walking a little again despite her two broken hips. We’ve been getting her a lot of treatment and she is thriving. Her 2nd miracle was when a lovely newly retired gentleman called Jamie spotted her and offered Lady a forever home to live out her life right here on the island. Nobody usually wants old and sick dogs so this incredibly selfless act is the huge slice of luck that Lady deserved after all the suffering she has endured. The Best Day Of Tina’s Life 🐕🥰 Tina was used for breeding puppies. We all saw the horrendous state she was in when she was rescued. Last week she was well enough to be sterilised so as she never has to have another puppy in her life again. It might seem like a small footnote in the bigger scheme of things but it was a moment of closure for this wonderful lady who has suffered so much. She can now just focus on being a dog for for the first time in her life and sharing all the love she has to give. Tina was the 521st dog I have sterilised since starting. King Whacker Of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✈️ Whacker is a very special dog who was one of the first arrivals back in November. Someone had tried to kill him with a pick axe. After recovering he turned into a true gent and is the big boss at the land. I promised he would never have to go back on the streets and this week after a process to find him the right home he got the news that he will be heading to Glasgow. Long live Whacker, the King of Scotland. 125 Dogs To Be Sterilised In May ✂️🐕 I spoke about how abstract sterilising can be for many people to understand but it is what will save the most dogs from suffering. In all of 2022 I was able to do 302 dogs. In the month of May alone I have a minimum target to fund 125. In June I hope to take that to 250 dogs for the month. Not easy and very expensive but I’m putting the groundwork in place to scale this up. Nothing is more important. Little Rodney was in getting the snip last week as one of the dogs this month. 7 European Dogs 🇪🇺🛫 By the end of June there will be 7 dogs who have traveled to Europe. Lottie, Hope, King Whacker, Rodney and Moritz will join Little Squeak and Peaches who just arrived in Germany. I can’t explain how hard it is to figure all this stuff out and get the processes in place. I’m focusing on Europe now as it is the easiest for travel and paperwork but the rest of the world will happen soon too. It’s only 7 dogs but seeing them in their homes or about to travel makes me so happy and proud for them all. Progress The suffering I see on a daily basis for street dogs means that I am never really happy with the speed and progress of my mission. I just want to help them all immediately but that isn’t possible. Having said that, reading this update and knowing what else is coming in the pipeline makes me feel that I am making genuine progress. Between food, funding sterilisations, medical care and re-homing dogs I can genuinely now say I’m helping 100s of dogs per month but also stopping the suffering of 1000s in the future. As I always say I could never do any of this without the online support and good wishes of everybody on the mission with me. I don’t feel like I am alone doing this.
