Firefighters quickly contained a fire in an Orléans home this morning and safely rescued a dog from inside the residence. At approximately 09:07, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from a monitoring company reporting an active fire alarm in a two-storey, single-family home in the 200 block of Bevington Walk. The monitoring company advised they had spoken with the homeowner, who was en route to the residence and confirmed, through interior security cameras, that there was an active fire inside the home. Additional 9-1-1 callers driving past the residence also reported flames visible from the home. Firefighters arrived on scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed heavy smoke and flames venting from a first-storey bay window at the front of the residence. Crews initiated a fast attack, advancing a hose line to quickly knock down flames that had breached the bay window. Firefighters then made entry through the front door and continued extinguishment efforts while a secondary crew conducted a search of the home. During the search, Firefighters located a dog inside the residence and safely carried the animal outside. The dog was not injured. The fire was declared under control at 09:23, approximately 10 minutes after firefighters arrived on scene, before flames could spread further through the structure. Two complete searches of the home confirmed no occupants were inside. Firefighters opened walls to check for any fire extension, with none found. High-pressure fans were used to ventilate residual smoke from the home. There were no reported injuries. One adult and one child have been displaced as a result of the fire. An Ottawa Fire Services investigator was dispatched to the scene to determine the cause. It was confirmed through interior security camera footage provided by the homeowner that the family dog had grabbed a skiing glove equipped with a lithium-ion battery used for heating. The dog brought the glove onto a couch and began chewing it, damaging the battery. The damaged lithium-ion battery subsequently failed and ignited, causing the fire. ‼️Safety Reminder: Lithium-ion batteries can pose a serious fire risk if they are damaged, punctured, crushed, or improperly handled. Japan Will Have to Rely on Its revolutionary Lithium Submarines Against China’s New Type 95 Nuclear Submarine China is expected to commission its first Type 95 nuclear-powered attack submarine in the coming weeks, a 7,000-8,000t vessel whose details remain largely estimates. By steadily refining Russian-derived technology, the Chinese are seeking to approach the performance level of the U.S. Virginia class. The Type 95 features modern technologies such as a pump-jet propulsor, advanced sensors, and numerous improvements over the earlier Type 093B. It is believed to achieve sustained speeds of around +25 knots. On the Japanese side stands the revolutionary Taigei class: diesel-electric submarines equipped with lithium-ion batteries that can remain submerged for up to three weeks and recharge in just a few hours. The latest units have incorporated upgrades including quieter snorkel systems, enhanced sensors, and improved battery performance. Can the 3,000-ton Taigei submarines deter the Type 095, which displaces more than twice as much? Both the Sea of Japan and the East/South China Seas feature extensive deep-water areas that strongly favor a nuclear submarine’s ability to maintain high constant speeds. Yet the Taigei would not be easy prey: its high-speed sprints nearly match the Chinese submarine’s cruising speed. Multiple Taigei boats would likely attempt to ambush a Type 95 if it ventured into shallower waters near Japan. Japanese electric submarines remain extremely quiet even at speeds above 10 knots for several days, setting the stage for a true underwater hunt. The Type 95 is expected to introduce new Chinese technologies specifically aimed at detecting very quiet submarines. In the coming years, the Type 95 fleet will gradually grow, but it will eventually face the Taigei’s successor, expected to feature solid-state batteries, higher speeds, submerged endurance approaching 60 days, and recharging times measured in minutes.
