Finland's handling of the Estlink cable incident might determine how Russian hybrid attacks look like in the future - Danish military expert Anders Nielsen discusses the incident and predicts that Russia might step up its hybrid attacks on Europe in the near future. According to him, if the captain of the vessel ends up in Finnish prison for a long time, it will be much more difficult and/or expensive for Russia to convince captains of its shadow fleet to commit any sort of hybrid attacks. So Finland's swift reaction is actually contributing to security in Europe. However, Russia will probably step up its attempts to make Europeans feel like war has come to their territory, Nielsen believes. One reason for that is for Europeans to halt weapon and equipment supplies to Ukraine because they are needed "at home" to deal with Russia's hybrid attacks. Another one is to emphasize that Russia will have the upper hand and is not to be messed with. Among other topics, we discussed the latest developments from Türkiye, cooperation with the United States, and Ukraine’s European future. I am grateful for their support. There was also a meeting in the “Ramstein” format. We are preparing decisions to support our joint defense production with partners. This is long-term security: our guarantees, European guarantees, guarantees for everyone that Russian aggression will not be able to expand and will not be rewarded. Russia must truly feel that war is worse than peace. That is exactly why sanctions are needed — especially against their oil trade. Sustained defense support for Ukraine is also essential, to protect our people and to defend our positions.
