We witnessed the raw power of nature yesterday just south of Seward Alaska! It was incredible to watch this massive glacier calving, sending a huge wave through the water. Absolutely breathtaking to see firsthand. Glacial calving is a natural process where large chunks of ice break off from the edge of a glacier. This typically happens at the “terminus” or snout, where the glacier meets the sea, a lake, or even dry land. When these massive pieces of ice fall into the water, they become icebergs, or in smaller pieces, “growlers” or “bergy bits.” The process is primarily driven by gravity and the movement of the glacier itself. As a glacier flows—acting like a slow-moving river of ice—it experiences immense internal stress. When it reaches a point where it is no longer supported by land or where it extends out over the water, the ice becomes unstable. Cracks called crevasses form in the ice, and when these cracks penetrate deep enough, a section of the ice can no longer hold its own weight and snaps off, crashing down with incredible force. Calving is a dynamic and loud phenomenon that often triggers significant waves. It is a normal part of a glacier’s life cycle, and very common in the warmer summer months.

By utilizing simple, zero-capital earthwork, the UT Administration has successfully created two diversions from Stok Nallah, to divert massive 90 million litres of untapped glacier runoff daily, from Stok Kangri glacier into the Igoo-Phey Irrigation Canal. Out of the 36 cusecs of discharge from the Stok Nallah, 25 cusecs of water has been diverted into the canal, thereby, augmenting water supply into the canal, from 50 cusecs to nearly 75 cusecs. Previously lost into the Indus River, this colossal volume of water will now guarantee daily supply to 12 villages and irrigate over 1,000 acres of historically parched land. For decades, this potential was entirely overlooked, leaving the 43-km canal defunct. Today, the successful demonstration of this pioneering initiative proves that large-scale, sustainable water management is entirely feasible in the cold deserts of Ladakh. This successful model is just a blueprint. Guided by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji’s vision of conserving water for future security, the Administration remains committed to expanding these cost-effective interventions, transforming scattered glacier flows into a permanent lifeline for agricultural prosperity, revitalized rural economies, and long-term climate resilience across Ladakh.

From an altitude of 17,000 ft on Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, a ~2,000 ft-wide chunk of glacier ice snapped off and fell ~4,000 ft to the valley below, generating an impact 6.3% as powerful as the Hiroshima nuclear explosion and causing a Magnitude 5.2 seismic event. Upon impact, this massive ice chunk was then pulverized into a violent 100+ ft-tall surge of glacier water, rocks, and mud that flowed into the nearby Trishuli River. Funneled by Nepal’s extremely steep and jagged terrain, the resulting flood wave became an unsurvivable wall of water and debris for the immediate communities downstream.

Following my visit to Chuchot village on August 16, and an earnest appeal by the people of Chuchot Village, we have successfully diverted nearly 20 million litres of Stok Glacier water, to the dry village canal in Chuchot, marking yet another landmark step to overcome the water crisis and ensuring agricultural sustainability. Combined with the water already channelized into the Igoo-Phey Irrigation Canal, we have succeeded in reducing the untapped water discharge into the Indus River from nearly 90 million litres water per day to just around 5 million litres daily. Our objective is clear – not a single drop of precious glacier melt should go to waste when our hardworking farmers need it for their fields. Using simple, low-cost, and gravity-based interventions, our engineers have completed this vital task swiftly. This will significantly boost agriculture, livelihoods, and water security in Ladakh. We remain committed to identifying such opportunities across the region to harness our natural resources for the prosperity of our local communities.
