Construction on the world's largest ship tunnel, which will allow some cruise ships to pass through, is set to begin in early 2027. The proposed tunnel will be built in Norway and will be over a mile long, 165 feet high, and 120 feet wide. The Stad Ship Tunnel will cut through solid rock on the Stadlandet Peninsula and allow cargo vessels, ferries, and cruise ships to bypass the Stadhavet Sea, some of the most dangerous waters off Norway's coast. 81% of ship traffic will reportedly be able to use the tunnel. 'AF Gruppen' was recently awarded the contract for the tunnel. The construction cost of the tunnel is expected to be about $900 million. It's unclear exactly how long it will take to complete the tunnel; however, the Coastal Administration previously estimated that construction would take about five years.

Slightly philosophical at close to 1000 feet under sea level. While driving through the world’s deepest subsea tunnel in Norway this May - I was reminded of the state of affairs in India. The suppression, the intimidation, the fear mongering & lies will only increase from this point onwards - because the reality is getting harder to suppress. But like a Norwegian tunnel - light & freedom is still some distance away and that’s why it’s important to speak up now for a peaceful & progressive India - because we believe THAT India is worth fighting for. #RyfylkeTunnel #DarknessToLight

I can say I am proud that about 80% of the project is already finished; the remaining 20% might take another two years or so to complete fully. Regardless, the breakthrough is a major event for the tunnel, and we are happy that, under the current system, we have managed to execute this project effectively. It will take roughly another two and a half years for the tunnel to fully open. However, in a dire emergency, especially if the Army needed to use it, it might be possible to utilise the tunnel for a short period, although under normal circumstances, it is not feasible to use it yet..."

MMRDA has successfully completed the Thane-side portal excavation and lowered the 13.34-metre single-shield Tunnel Boring Machine cutterhead, the largest ever deployed in India for an urban infrastructure project. This milestone signals the start of the actual tunnelling phase of this pathbreaking project. The 11.8-kilometre underground twin tunnel will seamlessly connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, and redefining how lakhs of Mumbaikars move. Passing beneath the eco-sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the tunnels are being built using the most advanced TBM technology to ensure safe, efficient and eco-friendly construction with minimal ground disturbance. Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including a dedicated emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres. The tunnels will be equipped with advanced ventilation systems, modern firefighting equipment, smoke detectors and illuminated LED signboards. During my visit to Lalbagh yesterday, GBA officials refused to accompany us to show the proposed tunnel route under the Lalbagh Rock. Even more alarming was the revelation that a commercial complex is planned at the shaft location within Lalbagh. Along with citizen experts and walkers, I witnessed the potential negative impact this tunnel project could have on the city. It threatens our historical landmarks and fragile ecological balance. The state government’s decision to take over land for a tunnel road that is unscientific, unnecessary, unsafe and unlawful is deeply concerning. Watch.

The Vespasianus Titus Tunnel is a 2,000-year-old engineering marvel – a massive tunnel dug through a mountain that was built to divert floodwaters threatening the harbor near the ancient city of Seleuceia Pieria in what is now Türkiye. According to UNESCO; it is one of the most magnificent remains of the Roman period because of its size, well-preserved authenticity, and architectural and engineering features. Titus Tunnel was neither built, nor completed by the Emperor Titus. The construction of this tunnel, began during reign of Vespasianus, the father of Titus, during second half of 1st Century AD. Although work continued during the reign of Titus (79-81 AD), it was only completed during the reign of Antonius Pius in the 2nd Century AD. These dates are known due to several rock-carved inscriptions found in the tunnel. At first tunnel section, the names Vespasianus and Titus can be found. This inscription reads ‘Divus Vespasianus et Divus Titus F.C.’ (‘Divine Vespasianus and Divine Titus caused it to be made’). Thus, it may be possible that the tunnel was jointly built by the two emperors. Another inscription in the downstream channel bears the name Antoninus Pius, indicating that construction was completed during the reign of this emperor. Titus Tunnel is located in modern day Samandag-Cevlik, Turkey. During Roman era, Samandag-Cevlik was known as Seleucia Pieria (Seleucia by the Sea). This ancient city was one of the four cities in the Syrian tetrapolis, the other three being Antioch by the Orontes, Apamea and Laodicea in Syria. Seleucia Pieria was once an important Roman port city, in which exotic goods from the East were exported to Rome. Perhaps the port’s most well-known ‘exports’ were St. Paul and St. Barnabas, as they were recorded to have sailed from this port on their first missionary journeys. This city, however, had a major problem, as it was constantly threatened by floodwater that came from the nearby mountains. As these waters from mountains carried silt and mud as they descended, harbor was inevitably silted up and became inoperative. Although canals were ordered to be built by previous emperors, they were to no avail, as the floods continued. In order to solve this problem once and for all, Vespasian decided to build a tunnel by digging through the mountain to divert the floodwaters. This diversion system was built on the principle of closing the front of the stream bed with a deflection cover and transferring the waters through an artificial canal and tunnel. Titus Tunnel was designed by engineers of Tenth legion Fratensis and built by Roman legionaries, sailors, and prisoners. Flavius Josephus, a Jewish historian, wrote that one of the canals in the region was built by Jewish slaves captured during the Jewish War (66-73 AD). Unsurprisingly, some have identified that canal with the Titus Tunnel. When completed, the Titus Tunnel spanned a distance of 1.4 km (0.86 mi). As the whole tunnel was carved through solid rock, this was a remarkable feat of Roman engineering, especially when one considers the relatively short amount of time required for its completion. Furthermore, this man-made marvel has survived until today without much damage. Moreover, Titus Tunnel is a testimony to Roman ingenuity in solving the challenges faced by its cities and is among the great constructions of the Roman world. In 2014, the Titus Tunnel was submitted to UNESCO, for the Tentative List of its World Heritage Sites. One of the many positive effects of this achievement is that people would be aware that the architectural achievements of ancient Rome are not limited to grand, imposing monuments, such as Colosseum and the triumphal arches of various emperors. Ok, maybe this is me being nerdy but I found this seriously cool! We're on day 33 of our Xinjiang RV roadtrip and today we're going through one of China's most impressive recent engineering accomplishments: the longest highway tunnel in the world, almost 23km long, going underneath the TianShan mountains (called the "Tianshan Shengli Tunnel"). It opened in December last year. What's truly cool is that we managed to visit the tunnel command center, from which they monitor the traffic in the tunnel in real time. It's a FAR more sophisticated operation that I expected: look at this 👇, they monitor each individual car and truck in real time on a massive screen, and have advanced AI systems surface any issue the very second it arises. Without a doubt the single most high-tech tunnel monitoring system in the world. This tunnel is actually genuinely transformational for Xinjiang, probably the single most transformational infrastructure project in the region this millennia (so far): the big issue here is that you have the TianShan mountains, some of the highest mountains in the world (over 7000m high) that literally divide the region in 2 between North and South Xinjiang. Before the tunnel the only way people could travel between North and South (or vice versa) was through small perilous roads through the mountains, or by driving around the mountains - in either case a massive (and often dangerous) journey that would take many hours. The tunnel cuts it down to... just 20 minutes! The highway and tunnel cost an absolute fortune to build - some 40 billion yuan - and there's no way they're ever going to get it back from toll fees alone. But we asked the staff here and they said that when you consider the impact it'll have on Xinjiang's economy as a whole, it's not even close. And that's kind of the whole Chinese infrastructure philosophy in a nutshell: infrastructure is seen as a catalyst, you measure the return across the entire region for the next 50 years.
