Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, India is redefining mine closure as a pathway to sustainable development. South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s South Jhagrakhand 5 & 6 Incline Underground Colliery stands as a testament to this transformation, where reclaimed mine land has been revitalised through plantation, environmental restoration and community-focused initiatives. The project demonstrates how responsible mine closure can create lasting ecological and social value long after mining operations cease. Visited the Murpar Mine Closure Site under the Umred Area of Western Coalfields Ltd. (WCL) last week. Work is underway to transform this site into a model for sustainable land use and community-oriented development —reflecting the Government’s commitment to responsible mine closure, environmental restoration, and the productive utilisation of post-mining landscapes. Watch glimpses from my visit, along with voices from the residents of Murpar, whose support and participation are crucial to this transformation: Ministry of Coal Western Coalfields Ltd.

In the Rajya Sabha today, I addressed key questions on coal exchange, coal gasification, and mine closure reforms. Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Government of India has brought greater transparency and efficiency to the allocation of coal blocks through open auctions. Today, nearly 73–74% of India’s power generation comes from coal-based thermal plants, with around 80% of the coal produced being supplied to the power sector. Critical industries such as cement, steel, and fertilisers also depend heavily on coal. India holds the world’s fifth-largest coal reserves, sufficient to meet our needs for the next 60–70 years. We are further strengthening this position by accelerating exploration activities. Today, India is the second-largest coal producer globally, and Coal India Limited remains the largest coal-producing company in the world. We have also made significant progress in coal gasification, with projects worth over ₹64,000 crore underway. Highlighted that there are two types of gasification — surface and underground. We are actively advancing surface gasification, while underground gasification technologies are being carefully studied. I will share further updates once these are finalised. On mine closure, 143 coal mines are currently undergoing scientific closure processes. Dedicated nodal officers have been appointed for each site, with oversight committees led by respective district collectors. These efforts are focused not only on environmental sustainability but also on generating employment opportunities and ensuring a just transition for affected communities. Watch here:

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢 𝐏𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬☕ Had an engaging interaction with students of IIT (ISM), Dhanbad in Jharkhand yesterday. The discussion encompassed various topics from placements and women empowerment to environmental challenges in coal mining. I shared how progressive reforms under the Narendra Modi government including New Labour Reforms have opened opportunities for women in mines which was accepted by the Labour Ministry on my request, highlighted the all-women-operated Begumpet station in Telangana, scientific closure of 143 mines setting a global record, and the Jharia rehabilitation initiative aimed at ensuring dignified living for affected families. Encouraged students to venture into startups in mine exploration and technology, strengthening self-reliance in the sector. Their curiosity and energy reaffirmed my belief that India is firmly moving towards #Atmanirbharta and a #ViksitBharat. Ministry of Coal Ministry of Mines IIT(ISM)
