Indian Army Strengthens Close Air Support with Prachand Sortie, Apache Firing The Indian Army has reinforced its focus on strengthening close air support for ground operations, a critical element in modern warfare. Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi flew a sortie on the indigenous Light Combat Helicopter Prachand at HAL, Bengaluru yesterday. This was followed by a key operational demonstration today at Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan, where the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter carried out its first field firing, successfully engaging targets with Hellfire missiles and other onboard weapons. The activities showcased how attack helicopters can operate in close coordination with ground troops, even in high-threat environments involving small arms fire, shoulder-fired missiles and drones. These platforms demonstrated rapid target acquisition and precision strike capability, directly supporting manoeuvre on the battlefield. Advanced sensors, fire control systems and real-time data links enabled faster decision-making and immediate action, ensuring that battlefield intelligence was quickly converted into effective strikes. The Apache highlighted its role as a force multiplier by enhancing the reach, lethality and responsiveness of ground forces, while Prachand reflected India’s growing indigenous strength in combat aviation. The demonstrations underline Indian Army’s focus on integrating air and land capabilities to enhance battlefield effectiveness and maintain operational momentum.

AFP, U.S., Partner Nations Conduct Counter-Landing Live Fire Exercise in Palawan The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), together with the United States Armed Forces, Australian Defence Force, and New Zealand Defence Force, conducted a Counter-Landing Live Fire Exercise (CLLFX-West) on April 27, 2026 at the Apurawan Beach Landing Site in Aborlan, Palawan, as part of Exercise Balikatan 41–2026. Led by the Philippine Marine Corps’ 3rd Marine Brigade, the exercise simulated a maritime threat involving an enemy amphibious landing along the coastline, showcasing combined forces’ capability to detect, disrupt, and deny hostile elements from establishing a beachhead. The activity demonstrated strong coordination and interoperability among participating forces in a complex littoral environment. The exercise highlighted a layered, multi-domain defense employing synchronized air, land, and indirect fire assets. The Philippine Air Force deployed FA-50 fighter jets for air interdiction, while U.S. forces provided High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) capabilities. Ground forces executed mid- to close-range engagements using artillery, mortars, light armored vehicles, anti-armor systems, heavy machine guns, and infantry weapons, supported by precision strikes and reconnaissance. In addition, a simulated Non-Combatant Evacuation Operation (NEO) was conducted in Sitio Bubusawin and Sitio Long Point, alongside a community outreach activity in coordination with the local government of Aborlan and Barangay Apurawan, underscoring the AFP’s role in both defense and humanitarian operations. General Romeo S. Brawner Jr, AFP Chief of Staff witnessed the live fire exercise as one of the distinguished visitors together with Vice Admiral Alan M Javier, Commander of Western Command. Also present were Major General James Bartholomees, Commander of the 25th Infantry Division, US Army; Major General Thomas Savage, Commander of the U.S. JTF for Exercise Balikatan 2026; and Rear Admiral Brent DeVore, Commander of the Expeditionary Strike Group THREE, U.S. Navy. “The Counter-Landing Live Fire Exercise demonstrates our capability to defend our shores through coordinated, combined arms operations in a littoral environment. By integrating fires from land, air, and maritime forces, we are able to detect, engage, and neutralize potential threats approaching from the sea, ensuring that any attempt to breach our coastline is met with a swift and unified response,” said Marine Colonel Dennis Hernandez, PH Balikatan 41-2026 Spokesperson. “More importantly, this activity strengthens joint fire support coordination and interoperability among participating forces. Beach defense is not the responsibility of a single unit or domain, it requires seamless integration across services and with our allies. Exercises like this ensure that we are prepared to protect our coastal communities and territorial integrity with precision, speed, and overwhelming coordination,” Col Hernandez added./// Photos and Videos by: SSG Ambay PA/PAOAFP; 3rd Marine Brigade, Philippine Marine Corps; and Staff Sgt. PH, Japan Showcase Unified Naval Might in Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) launched a new phase of defense cooperation with the successful conduct of the 2nd Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) on June 14, 2025, marking one of the first major joint activities following the recently ratified Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) between the Philippines and Japan. More than a maritime drill, the MCA underscored the operationalization of the RAA—an accord that lays the groundwork for increased joint training, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response (HADR) initiatives between the AFP and JSDF. This activity highlights the deepening trust and coordination between the two allies as they respond to traditional and emerging security challenges in the region. Participating Philippine assets included the BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG06), AW159 anti-submarine helicopter, PAF C-208 ISR aircraft, and Search and Rescue units. Meanwhile, Japan deployed the JS Takanami (DDG110) and an SH-60K Seahawk helicopter, demonstrating joint capability in a wide array of naval operations. The MCA featured key exercise serials such as communication check exercise, anti-submarine warfare exercise, cross-deck exercise, Division Tactics and Officer of the Watch Maneuvers (DIVTACS/OOW), Photo Exercises (PHOTOEX), and a Finish Exercise (FINEX), showcasing seamless interoperability between the two forces. AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo S Brawner Jr. emphasized the broader strategic significance of the exercise, “This cooperative activity is more than a display of maritime capability—it is a manifestation of our enduring commitment to uphold peace, stability, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific. With the RAA now in effect, our coordination with Japan will only grow stronger and more responsive to the complex demands of our shared security environment.” Photos and Videos by: PO3 Gonzales PN / PAOAFP A1C Castro PAF / PAOAFP JMSDF #AFPyoucanTRUST #OneAFPOnePhilippines #StrongAFPStrongPhilippines #OurSeasOurRightsOurFuture
