F1 or Formula One for the MS-DOS PC (Domark/1993) is a racing game built on the engine used in the 1991 Amiga/Atari ST game Vroom by French studio Lankhor. Oficially licensing the 1993 F1 season, except for pilot Ayrton Senna, excluded because he was already signed exclusivity by Sega for Super Monaco GP II. The game was critically praised for its fluid framerate and speed, and was released on the Sega systems as well.

Who played this epic masterpiece of gaming history? Some games feel truly timeless. Stunt Car Racer (MicroStyle, 1989) is one of them. It was designed by Geoff Crammond, the genius behind other legendary titles such as The Sentinel and Formula One Grand Prix. The iconic “vroooooooooooom” when you rev it up, the cleverly drawn crack along the upper frame of the car to show damage, the incredible physics, and those massive jumps across insane ramps… What more is there to say? It was a near-perfect game in its time and remains a whole lot of fun 37 years later. Hopefully, it will still be talked about by future generations who haven’t even been born yet. F1 Circus MD for Mega Drive (by Micronics/Nichibutsu) was popular in Japan upon its release in December 1991, part of a successful series of Formula One games by Nichibutsu. It's specifically a port of the PC Engine game F1 Circus '91, although it reminds me a lot of the MSX classic F1 Spirit by Konami (which would probably look, play and sound like this in 16-bit).

One of the best ever racing games of the golden era - if not the best one - will turn 40 this year. And it still looks (and sounds!) amazing. It introduced not just one but several new features at the time. Out Run was the first arcade cabinet with a steering wheel featuring force feedback to mimic road surfaces, plus pedals and a gear shift. For a little kid, this was beyond epic. It was also the first to let players choose from three synth-pop tracks (Magical Sound Shower, Passing Breeze, and Splash Wave) via an in-game radio to personalize the vibe. It simulated real Ferrari Testarossa traits (horsepower, torque, and gears) and allowed skillful drifting - or bad drifting, in my case. Another cool fetaure (a "choose your own adventure" if you will) was the forked road (left/right) at certain intervals, giving the player a choice and making it more "interactive". It's no surprise that this legends ultimately became Sega's top-selling arcade game later in 1987 and is still talked about today, in its 40th year.

QuackShot Starring Donald Duck for Mega Drive (Sega/1991). Disney games on this system are great and this is no exception. It's one of the best 16-bit games of the type and a standout platformer. It features an Indiana Jones-inspired adventure where Donald travels the globe, uses plungers as weapons, and engages in puzzle-style exploration.

On the surface it's a simple 2D action platformer, but every boss fight suddenly transforms into a one-on-one fighting game complete with special move mechanics. Released only in Japan in 1999, it feels like two completely different genres accidentally merged into one game, and somehow it works.
