Ever wondered why the Airbus A330-200F has that strange “double chin” under its nose? It’s a clever landing-gear modification designed to solve a cargo-loading problem. The A330 naturally sits with a slight nose-down attitude on the ground. That isn’t an issue for passengers, but it becomes a problem when you’re trying to load heavy freight containers onto a main cargo deck. A sloped cargo floor means you're effectively pushing tonnes of cargo uphill. So Airbus needed the A330-200F to sit level on the ground. Instead of designing an entirely new, longer nose landing gear which would have reduced commonality with the A330 family, Airbus modified the existing arrangement by lowering the nose landing gear attachment points into the fuselage. When the nose gear retracts, that lower attachment arrangement requires additional space inside the forward fuselage. The solution is the distinctive bulged fairing beneath the cockpit: the A330F’s famous “double chin.” So that odd-looking bump is actually part of the aircraft's landing-gear architecture, allowing the main cargo deck to remain level during loading. The A330-200F was a purpose-built freighter, so Airbus incorporated this modification from the beginning. A330-300F added a powered cargo loading system that made the nose bump unnecessary. The A330-200P2F and A330-300P2F are passenger-to-freighter conversions. They retain the original aircraft structure and do not have the purpose-built A330-200F nose-gear “double chin.” Video via Akino33

Here's the full surveillance video showing moments before the Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 (D-ABPQ) nose gear collapsed at Frankfurt. If you watch closely, the nose landing gear doors open first, indicating what appears to be the start of a normal landing gear retraction sequence. According to reports, the Dreamliner had logged a maintenance request the previous day involving a landing gear door error message. On the Boeing 787, maintenance personnel can place the aircraft into a special maintenance mode (on the overhead panel, turn switch to "enable"). Boeing manuals emphasize that if maintenance mode is enabled, hydraulics are powered, and the gear lever is selected UP, the landing gear can retract regardless of weight-on-wheels protection. To prevent this, there's an override button where the gear handle lockout can be bypassed to move the gear handle even if it is locked out. The only way this can happen is by intentionally bypassing the normal safety lockouts used during maintenance procedures. Outside of maintenance or certain emergency procedures, the aircraft's weight-on-wheels system prevents gear retraction on the ground. Lufthansa says the aircraft has since been recovered. Fuel was removed, the jet was lifted, the nose gear was re-extended, and the aircraft was successfully towed under its own weight to a maintenance hangar. Germany's Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation has completed evidence collection from the aircraft and is now gathering witness statements. An interim report is expected within approximately 8 weeks. 📹: airlinersde via YouTube, link on first comment here.

WATCH: A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (D-ABPQ) sustained substantial damage after its nose landing gear collapsed while parked at the gate at Frankfurt Airport. The incident led to the cancellation of today's LH450 to LAX service as airport and airline teams assess the extent of the damage. Video from the scene shows the aircraft resting on its nose after the front landing gear unexpectedly gave way while stationary. No injuries have been reported, but a technical investigation into the cause of the collapse has been opened.

👀 This isn't just a landing gear... It's the system that has to survive thousands of pounds of force slamming onto an aircraft carrier deck. Watch this U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet undergo a hydraulic landing gear cycle test, where every actuator, lock, and strut is checked before the jet is cleared to fly.
