Thomas Sowell dismantles a widespread belief: that poverty is a moral problem whose solution belongs to intellectuals. Humanity, he reminds us, (after the great fall )began in poverty. There’s nothing surprising about that. What truly deserves explanation is why some societies and some individuals managed to create wealth, and why some did so better than others. Much of today’s public debate skips that question entirely and simply assumes that poverty is the default condition of mankind and that wealth is something that has to be “explained” or “justified” — usually as the result of exploitation or some other moral failing.
