“Concentration - managing the game - basics of the game” A big thank you to Brentford head coach, Keith Andrews, for reinforcing the importance of mindset… As Coach Andrews is saying here, mindset is a basic of the game. It is central to the execution of every technical, tactical, and physical action. It constantly mediates the precision and accuracy of anticipation and decision-making… Attention Intensity Intent Coach Andrews bemoans players dropping in attention and shifting in intensity (Low Performance Mindset - LPM) and so subsequently not reading the game…not tracking the runners. And then he bemoans a low intent with actions (LPM again) - losing duels by not being aggressive and so unable to nullify the opposition. Oh yes Coach Andrews, yes sir, mindset lies at the heart of your players’ behaviour…and subsequent performance… Attention Intensity Intent “Our job on the pitch is to be in our High Performance Mindset (HPM). It’s to be in our HPM no matter what - high attention, optimal intensity, high intent. Every second in control and in charge. In control and in charge. Nothing and no one takes us away from our HPM. The great Frank Lampard talking with the great Rodri about scanning. Mr Lampard calls it picturing, borrowing from his father’s term for it. “Pictures, pictures, pictures” Frank Lampard Snr used to shout from the sidelines as he watched his son progress at the West Ham Academy. Why? Because all team invasion sports are the same. At the heart of these games lie the skills of anticipation and decision-making. Players who scan their performance environment give themselves the opportunity to: 1. See opportunities to exploit them 2. See dangers to deal with them 3. See patterns to understand the game around them So, of course, it’s critical to instruct a player to scan. And, of course, creating activities in sessions that encourage scanning is crucial. But here’s the thing. Perhaps the most powerful way to promote scanning behaviour is to help players understand why ‘picture taking’ is important. So often, establishing the meaning underpinning behaviour can change behaviour. Useful can be to encourage players to understand that your team invasion sport is about actions and interactions. They constantly have to interact with their playing environment - teammates, opposition, space, ball, and target. Help them understand they are detectives of what’s happening around them. A Sherlock Holmes of the interacting elements emerging and dissolving, shifting and shaping around them. By moulding their interest in their performance environment, you help your players mentally in two ways. It places their focus of attention outwards - they get out of their head into the game - an external focus of attention. Importantly, it also increases their activation levels (alertness and readiness) due to a rise in their fascination with what’s going on around them (a dopaminergic link here, perhaps). Scanning, scanning, scanning Pictures, pictures, pictures …these are important instructions…but even more powerful could be to help players understand why they need to get their head up and start exploring the game around them.

Attention Intensity Intent It was interesting to watch Arne Slot talk about the importance of energy in his coaching practice. When I had the pleasure and honour of working with Arne at Feyenoord we used to talk a lot about helping players manage their energy - both physical and mental. Attention Intensity Intent In the model I use with coaches, intensity is mental energy. I used to talk to Arne a lot about players competing with an optimal level of mental energy (to complement the physical intensity that’s critical for the game). Arne being Arne - he was always open to my suggestions around managing and optimising energy. For me, in this video Arne is talking about the difference between ‘fun’ and ‘enjoyment’. Activities aren’t always ‘fun’ but players tend to enjoy difficult. They tend to enjoy the challenge. Sweat and smiles Sweat and smiles Sweat and smiles Challenging activities also tap attention and intent. Constraints and conditions appropriately set channel attention and a drive a high level of intent.
