Internet Computer's Cycle Burn Rate is Skyrocketing: What it means... Today, the Internet Computer (DFINITY Foundation) dashboard showed a sharp rise in Cycle Burn Rate to about 0.30 TCYCLES per second, a 6–10× increase from its previous rate of 0.03–0.05 TCYCLES/s. This was mainly due to a temporary load test conducted by Toko App, an NFT app on ICP, testing the fleet management capabilities. The test is expected to run for most of the day. However, what it means for the protocol is very important: 1.) Real network usage is increasing: Cycles are burnt only when the canisters perform tasks such as executing programs, storing data, or processing messages. Higher burn rates indicate increased computation being performed by the Internet Computer at present. 2.) $ICP tokens are being destroyed: The creation of those cycles requires burning of ICP tokens through the Cycles Minting Canister process. The ICP tokens are burned forever, hence reducing the number of tokens available in circulation. 3.) Deflationary pressure is increasing: Higher burn rates act as an offset against the constant minting of new ICP tokens for the purpose of rewarding node providers and governance of the network. 4.) It contributes to the Mission 70 objectives: One of the main objectives of ICP's Mission 70 is the significant reduction in inflation until the end of 2026. In other words, the soaring Cycle Burn Rate demonstrates that the Internet Computer is being used productively. Future development will determine whether these rates persist, but the indicator itself is one of the clearest signs of true demand.

$ICP = World Computer (Since 2015)⬇️ In 2014, dom williams.icp ∞ , Chief Scientist of the DFINITY Foundation became involved with the early Ethereum community. At the time, the concept of a blockchain that could run software (i.e. smart contracts), which stored and processed data within an unstoppable, tamperproof and autonomous on-chain environment, was both revolutionary and controversial within the industry. At some point, the concept of a blockchain playing the role of a “World Computer” was mooted within the Ethereum community. One interpretation was that such a network would perform a trickle of simple but important smart contract computations for the world. However, Dominic’s interpretation, based on his work, was that World Computer blockchain would inevitably eventually host much of humanity’s systems and services, and all its data and compute, largely replacing traditional IT, and transforming social media, gaming, finance, enterprise systems and many other domains. In 2015, however, Dominic was a lone heretic, and was largely alone in believing that the creation of a true World Computer blockchain was technically feasible, let alone that it might be capable of successfully playing that role in competition with centralized computing infrastructure. Since Dominic strongly believed otherwise, based on his accumulated technical experiences and work on crypto theory, he decided to dedicate himself to blockchain research that might realize the concept, originally, he hoped, in the form a more advanced Ethereum 2.0. He stopped work on Pebble, and directed all his future efforts towards the realization of the World Computer blockchain vision. In early 2015, Dominic’s thinking about blockchain design had become more mature, and he began proposing new approaches to consensus, applied cryptography and blockchain network architecture. Around that time, he began using the name DFINITY as a brand for his work, which takes its characters from decentralized infinity. Through the period 2015 to 2016, Vitalik Buterin, and associates such as Vlad Zamfir, were the Ethereum project’s primary consensus researchers, and were highly focused on developing cryptoeconomic schemes, including under the Casper banner. Meanwhile, Dominic was more focused on finding new ways to leverage advanced cryptography and distributed computing math, and devising alternative blockchain architectures, which might enable a World Computer to be produced. Nobel Prize-winning “Godfather of AI” Geoffrey Hinton just exposed the lie at the center of the AI race. Everyone assumes we control what we create. Hinton destroys this. Hinton: “If you look around on the whole, more intelligent things are not controlled by less intelligent things.” Stop calling it a computer program. Hinton: “People refer to them sometimes as computer programs. They’re not computer programs at all. In fact, the way they work is very like the way we work.” Traditional software is static. Human writes logic. Machine executes it. Neural networks don’t work that way. Hinton: “You write a computer program to tell a neural network how to learn. But once it starts learning, it extracts structure from data.” We don’t code its behavior. We code the environment. Then it grows. Hinton: “The system you’ve got at the end has extracted its structure from the data. It’s not something that anybody programmed. We don’t exactly know how it’s gonna work.” We are deploying systems into the global economy actively writing their own internal logic. Right now. Hinton: “Some people think it’ll be fine because we make them and we’ll build them in such a way that we can always control them.” Hinton: “But these things that will be intelligent, they’ll be like us.” You cannot hardcode guardrails on something that out-thinks you.
