Only 1 out of every 4 Chicago Public Schools students can read at grade level, and only 17% are proficient in math. Since 2019, CPS’s budget has grown by more than 57% to over $9 billion, yet there has been no significant improvement in test scores. Just 21% of students in Chicago can read and do math at an eighth-grade proficiency level. At Douglas Academy High School, which has the capacity for more than 900 students, only 34 were enrolled in 2024. The school spent $68,091 per student, 3x the average, yet failed to produce a single student proficient in either math or English at grade level.

San Francisco’s public school students will now have more access to 1:1 tutors. SFUSD is expanding tutoring to reach 2,700 elementary school students, with a focus on improving third-grade literacy. Thank you to SFUSD and SF Ed Fund, for partnering with our Department of Children Youth and their Families and coming together on this tutoring expansion. And thank you to SF Parents for your advocacy in service of student outcomes. My administration will continue working closely with SFUSD to ensure students have the resources they need to succeed. Through our Family Opportunity Agenda, we’re focusing on what helps kids and families thrive—making sure every child has the support they need at key milestones, including in the classroom.

Our technical colleges have, over the years, been left to rot, undervaluing the unique type of education they provide and the critical role they play in building a skilled and productive society. We are changing that by strengthening these institutions to focus on practical, technical, and vocational skills that prepare our students for real opportunities. The tools and equipment provided are deliberately selected to align with future-ready skills, not outdated methods, ensuring our students are trained for the realities of today and tomorrow. These schools are equipped to nurture not just future employees, but future employers, giving students the tools and environment to practice what they are taught and build real capacity. Our goal is clear: to prepare our young people for the future by giving them access to the right skills, resources, and opportunities to succeed. On my most recent Cow Guy Close feature, we discuss the alarming decline in our education system, where college freshmen now arrive with the reading and math skills of a 10-year-old. Instead of focusing on basic educational skills, schools are prioritizing social justice, personal pronouns, and over-reliance on technology. It is time to stop lowering standards in the name of diversity and return to a true meritocracy that holds every student accountable to the same high expectations.

Mid-year Progress Monitoring results show impressive learning gains with English Language Arts up 10 points and Math up 18 points since the start of the school year. Compared to this same time last year, more than 50,000 additional students are now demonstrating mastery in ELA and nearly 20,000 more students in Math. Parents and teachers, it’s crunch time! Continue to work together and finish the school year strong, so every student is ready for the next grade level.

No parent should have to choose between retirement and their child’s future. 2⃣College credit in high school — under my tenure as mayor, 50% of our students graduated with free credits and the confidence they can do it. 3⃣A plan for every graduate — no diploma without a letter of acceptance to college, a trade program, or the armed forces. You’re not just walking on graduation day — you’re walking to something. That’s how we restore the American Dream — one student, one opportunity at a time.

There has been much debate on using common core math in schools curriculum. Do you agree with using common core math in schools? 🚨BREAKING –– Footage from Marietta High School in GA this morning shows hundreds of students being physically blocked by administrators from engaging in a student-organized walkout in defense of immigrants and all people being terrorized by ICE. Reportedly the superintendent of the Marietta Schools system attempted to physically restrain students as students demanded to assert their constitutionally protected first amendment rights to assemble and peacefully protest. This despicable behavior of intimidation and harassment of students by school administrators should be condemned by all and they will be held accountable! We stand with the thousands of students across Georgia courageously walking out of classes today in protest of the racist mass deportation machine!

Doug Ford has failed the young people of Ontario. The next generation of teachers, carpenters, and nurses is leaving this province because they can't afford to live here, let alone raise a family. Here's my plan to restore hope for our youth in Ontario: - Eliminate interest on OSAP loans and raise the income threshold for repayment to $50,000. - Introduce fair, phased-in rent control to ensure young people aren’t pouring their hard-earned money into rent instead of saving for a home. - Support the creation of 40,000 new paid co-op, internship, and apprenticeship positions through tax credits for employers who hire young people. It's time for a leader who delivers more for our young people.

Chicago Public Schools just got another major break from the Illinois State Board of Education. Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, schools will no longer be downgraded for chronic absenteeism, even though 40% of students miss 10% or more of school days without a valid excuse. Now students can skip class for protests and walkouts without it hurting their school’s rating. This follows the state’s decision last year to lower proficiency cut scores on standardized tests, instantly inflating reported reading and math proficiency rates with zero actual improvement in student performance. Ben Bradley claims this redesign of the school report card is not meant to lower standards and give more schools better grades. Claiming that removing penalties doesn’t lower standards is pure gaslighting. If we lower standards enough, we can just declare every school a smashing success. This is how Illinois pretends to improve education.
