On the whole "TNS online killed locals" topic and offline vs. online discussion, one thing Tong touches on in the podcast is how Tampa Never Sleeps Online is a major loss leader for the company. To run online events at the scale and quality TNS does, they take on: - 8 full time employees - All commentators/TO's/staff paid for their time - Infrastructure costs TNS is losing money on nearly every online event they run, while employing people within the FGC and giving a platform for the players and smaller game communities. The tradeoff is the service to the community and awareness of the brand the online tournaments provide, which helps them land and work offline events to pay the bills. These offline events become the hubs people gather at. It's not offline vs. online, it's one community.

Read 100 paywalled research papers for free every month! You don't even need a university account to do this. Here's how to read paywalled papers on JSTOR for free: 1. Go to jstor(dot)org and click on "Register" in the top-right corner. You can register with your personal Google or Outlook account. Or, you can create a JSTOR account manually. 2. Once you've logged in to your JSTOR account, click on "Workspace" in the menu bar. Then click on "Create folder." Choose a name for your folder and click on "Create."Creating folders in Workspace is a great way to keep your papers organized. 3. Type in the keywords in the search bar to find relevant papers. JSTOR willl give you a list of papers. To read a paper for free, click on "Read online." You will see a preview of the paper. Scroll down a bit and click on "Read Online" again. 4. If you find the paper super-relevant to your project, click on "Save" on the top of the article. Choose the folder you just created in your Workspace and save the paper in it. If you go to your Workspace, the paper will show up in the relevant folder. 5. You can also take notes on papers in your Workspace. To do so, click on the "Add Note" button under a paper and start typing. Click on "Save" to your save your note. 6. If you already have a paper and you want to related to it, you can use Text Analyzer. To do so, click on "Tools" and select "Text Analyzer." Upload the paper you have and JSTOR will give you a list of papers related to you original paper. 7. Text Analyzer also lets you callibrate your search parameters. Gallup did a study where they asked people to identify the worst event in their life and the best event. They found an 80% correlation between the two events. In LiveView, we keep the state in one place - the server - and it simplifies a lot. But sometimes the state on the client is preferred, or even necessary, and we can't use LiveView for that part. The event coincided with the completion of installation of text on the facade of the Museum building — drawn from President Obama’s 2015 speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery marches on this very date. And yet, even as we look to the past for inspiration, the campus is not a monument to it. It is a living destination for people who refuse to accept the status quo. Here's how I would learn data engineering basics in 2025: - Find a data source you care about (examples: gaming APIs, stock market, web scraping, etc) - Use Python to interact and ingest your source. Initially just write the data to a CSV. - Setup an account with Snowflake or Google BigQuery. - update your Python script to load a table in Snowflake/BigQuery - schedule your script with CRON in the cloud with a service like Heroku. - build aggregations and visualizations on top of your ingested data Only thing this misses is data quality and complex job orchestration which you can learn later! How would you learn data engineering nowadays?
