Automating the lab bench is the best thing we can do for AI in biology. Most experiments are still run by hand. Every biologist's handiwork is unique and every lab is a little different. So, biology faces widespread reproducibility issues. But, AI will demand more reproducible data than we can produce, and generate more ideas than we can test. Ai Day last week was a blast! I had a great time presenting alongside many colleagues from InstaDeep and BioNTech SE, some of our ongoing Bio+AI initiatives. We made several announcements, introducing Kyber, our new supercomputing cluster (more on this soon), as well as BFN, our new paradigm for generative AI, with competitive results on protein and antibody generation. During Ai Day we also delivered two live demos of Laila, our new AI agent, including one from BioNTech's TechLab in Mainz, Germany! To our knowledge, this was one of the first demos of its kind featuring a GPT-4 level AI agent acting in the Lab, interacting with scientists and technicians and helping them enhance their productivity! Ai Day was a significant moment for all of us, and it was exciting to see both the event and Laila featured by several publications including Financial Times ( Curious to see it in action? Welcome to the Lab of the Future! 🧬🤖 Excited to share LUMI-lab, out today in Cell — a self-driving platform that pairs an AI foundation model with a robotic lab to autonomously discover ionizable lipids (LNPs) for mRNA delivery. The core problem: Designing lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) is hard. The chemical space of ionizable lipids is vast, experimental cycles are slow, and — critically — historical LNP datasets are far too small to train a predictive model from scratch. Most AI approaches in this space hit a wall immediately: not enough data to learn from. Our solution: lab-in-the-loop foundation model learning. Instead of training on LNP data alone, LUMI starts as a transformer-based foundation model pretrained across broad chemical space, building rich molecular representations before it ever sees a single LNP experiment. Then it enters a closed loop with a robotic synthesis platform: predict → synthesize → assay → update. There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding multimodal LLMs in medicine. At the Hiesinger Lab we’ve been building Almanac Chat for over 6 months alongside our collaborators and we’re excited to showcase the first preview! • Almanac Chat is the first truly multimodal medical LLM trained across specialties and modalities (i.e. images, text, video and audio) to serve as a generalist clinical copilot. • The entire stack (e.g. server, client, ML pipeline) is developed and hosted locally to guarantee privacy and flexibility at inference time. • We're looking forward to evaluating our model alongside domain experts at Stanford Medicine in Q2 2024. • We have a a lot more exciting things on the way - see if you can spot a few teasers in the video! 👥: We’re looking to scale our team, model, and hardware. As of 5:00am this morning, all power has been restored in San Francisco. PG&E has informed us that anyone impacted by this power outage will receive a credit on their bill. If you believe you should get more than the credit, any small business owner or resident should visit It has been a long few days. Thank you to our city workers who helped us through this outage. We have more bad weather coming, so remember to charge your devices and have food and water ready. This weekend was a good reminder for all of us to stay prepared for any emergency.
