Finally got around to making a loop from the severe weather sequence from April 23rd (Thursday) to April 29th (Tuesday). This was a very active stretch, with a total of 103 tornado reports, 500 hail reports, and 501 damaging wind reports. Along with this, a total of 264 tornado warnings and 1,218 severe thunderstorm warnings were issued.

From the Tidal Basin looking toward the Jefferson Memorial, conditions are calm this morning, but a dangerous line of severe storms is expected to sweep through later today. School districts across the region are closing early, and major sites on the National Mall including the Washington Monument are shutting down early ahead of the threat. A volatile stretch of weather is setting up tonight across a large part of the country from southern Michigan through Indiana and Illinois, and south into Texas. Here in northwest Indiana, including Crown Point, conditions are lining up for all modes of severe weather. The Weather Channel measures severe weather potential using our TOR:CON (Tornado Condition Index) and tonight the value here is 7 out of 10, meaning tornadoes are likely within 50 miles of a given location if storms develop. What’s possible with these storms: • Tornadoes, potentially strong (EF2–EF3+) • Large hail up to 2 inches in diameter • Damaging straight-line winds Another concern: timing. Many of these storms will move through in the middle of the night. Nighttime tornadoes are especially dangerous because they’re hard to see, often rain-wrapped, and most people are asleep when warnings are issued. Howard Lutnick has the audacity to talk about the National Weather Service in the Senate hearing after Donald Trump’s DOGE clowns gutted the NWS, firing 17% of staff and leaving offices crippled. Forecasters are short-staffed, they're missing chief roles, and are having fewer balloon launches. This is making us incredibly unsafe during tornado season. And let's not forget those Texas floods where warnings failed, so nearly 140 people died while Republicans were trying to “own the libs” by slashing the experts who save lives. Republicans still haven't funded FEMA either. Disgraceful.
