do you really think people are that dumb that they can't look at the real time radar and figure out the shape? FM weather transmitted the area. FM comes with connectivity, mobiles do not. mobile apps and phones become obsolete - 3G gone. Apps arent needed for this.

Storms are moving toward the nation’s capital this afternoon, and officials across the D.C. metro are taking precautions. From the Tidal Basin looking toward the Jefferson Memorial, conditions are calm this morning, but a dangerous line of severe storms is expected to sweep through later today. School districts across the region are closing early, and major sites on the National Mall including the Washington Monument are shutting down early ahead of the threat. Forecasters warn the storms could bring hurricane-force wind gusts and the potential for long-track tornadoes. It’s the most significant severe weather threat for the D.C. metro since spring 2023. If you’re in the area: • Stay weather aware this afternoon • Keep alerts on your phone enabled • Be ready to take shelter quickly if warnings are issued More live updates on The Weather Channel.

Reporting from Lena, Illinois, tonight (April 17th) for The Weather Channel following this afternoon’s tornado. The damage through the town is widespread, with several homes and businesses sustaining substantial structural damage. Many areas are currently difficult to access due to a significant number of downed trees and power lines across the roadways. The most important update: despite the severity of the property damage, there are no known deaths or injuries reported at this time. Local crews are on-site working to clear debris and restore access. Stay safe and stay weather-aware throughout the evening as severe weather is still ongoing in parts of the country with numerous tornado warnings active still. #ILwx #LenaIL #Tornado #TheWeatherChannel #Illinois #SevereWeather

A volatile stretch of weather is setting up tonight across a large part of the country from southern Michigan through Indiana and Illinois, and south into Texas. Here in northwest Indiana, including Crown Point, conditions are lining up for all modes of severe weather. The Weather Channel measures severe weather potential using our TOR:CON (Tornado Condition Index) and tonight the value here is 7 out of 10, meaning tornadoes are likely within 50 miles of a given location if storms develop. What’s possible with these storms: • Tornadoes, potentially strong (EF2–EF3+) • Large hail up to 2 inches in diameter • Damaging straight-line winds Another concern: timing. Many of these storms will move through in the middle of the night. Nighttime tornadoes are especially dangerous because they’re hard to see, often rain-wrapped, and most people are asleep when warnings are issued. Before you go to bed tonight: 📱 Turn on emergency alerts on your phone 🔋 Make sure your phone is fully charged 🏠 Know your safe place, the lowest level, interior room, away from windows My team is in northwest Indiana tracking the setup and the storms as they develop. 📺 Stay with The Weather Channel for live coverage and updates as this severe weather threat unfolds. When warnings are issued overnight, those alerts may be the only thing that wakes you up. Make sure they’re on.

Howard Lutnick has the audacity to talk about the National Weather Service in the Senate hearing after Donald Trump’s DOGE clowns gutted the NWS, firing 17% of staff and leaving offices crippled. Forecasters are short-staffed, they're missing chief roles, and are having fewer balloon launches. This is making us incredibly unsafe during tornado season. And let's not forget those Texas floods where warnings failed, so nearly 140 people died while Republicans were trying to “own the libs” by slashing the experts who save lives. Republicans still haven't funded FEMA either. Disgraceful.

In a 30 km/hr (20 mph) city, traffic lights and stop signs are entirely unnecessary. At such speed, with a few road markings, traffic situations can be solved with eye contact; allowing everybody to get where they are going more safely, more quietly, and—ironically—more quickly.
