Introducing proof of concept React Imgui! The name is a joke, but it is accurate enough. In the last few days I have been working on a prototype of React driving Dear ImGui using Static Hermes. The result is a fully native app written almost entirely in JavaScript, using... unmodified React, typed JS, plus a very small amount of glue C++ code and unmodified Dear ImGui and Sokol. The actual renderer translating React into Dear ImGui is written entirely in typed JS using zero-cost FFI. Of course this wouldn't be possible without React's great design and flexibility. I find it really fascinating that I was able to take literally unmodified React, write a little extra JS, and get a functional fully native app so quickly. Of course everything is unoptimized, and prototype code quality, and who knows how buggy, but it seems to work well enough. Please, watch the video to see it in action. If there is interest, I will write a more detailed article.show more

In 2023, I worked with Android, Compose, SwiftUI, Flutter, React Native, C++, web, React, Svelte, Framer, Noesis, Bevy, and Unity. All using Rive runtimes. Implementing new features, fixing bugs, testing, and creating fun demos. It was such a blast. Below is a highlight video of some of my favorite projects of the year.

made this in blender and react. still surprising how powerful a tool functional composition is. the ticker is solved with minimal effort, same semantics devs would use on the web. this is a side that is generally ignored in webgl/threejs. canvas3d is thought of in terms of scene primitives, math and shaders. these are all good to know. but i see people all the time trying to use these for solving problems that are inherently of a compositional nature, and fail. imperative javascript and oop lack composition. this is the only thing react adds to threejs (and any other platform it renders to), it allows it to compose.

$Everyone's sleeping on MiniMax. Again. They just shipped M3. The first open-weights model to combine frontier coding, 1M context, and native multimodality in one drop. I plugged it into Claude Code this morning. Pasted a design from Dribbble. Watched M3 write production-ready React code in one session. At the agency, I just replaced Opus 4.8 with M3 for 80% of our coding tasks. The output is the same and we are running everything at a fraction of the cost. Open infrastructure is the future.$

I made it! 🥳 The Hotel Admin UI is completed. 😊🙌 Personally, I really enjoyed working on this UI. I was able to learn a lot and gain a better understanding of how to create a user friendly experience. We wanted to show the performance and the insane power of the Static Hermes native FFI. But we don't yet support the all language features needed to compile React Native (soon though!), so we improvised. We imported the bindings for DearImGui (a popular C++ imperative game UI library that renders meshes), and Sokol (an amazing lightweight 3D backend in C) and wrote a small demo. "Imperative UI" means that the entire UI and the state of the screen is recreated on every frame, which suits our purposes to demonstrate SH very well. The demo runs 100% compiled native code. JavaScript runs in every frame and recreates the entire state of the screen. It is portable to all platforms, though the screen layout is not optimized for phone. We wrote the demo in C++ and in JS, to compare, and they both ran with the same performance. In the attached videos you can see the demo running at the stable screen refresh rate - 120Hz on my Mac, 60Hz on a old Moto G5 phone. It includes some widgets, an n-body simulation of planets, a playable game demo, etc.

Ok, my mind is blown with Replit Agents. I started using it because I was bored on a train ride a couple of days ago. So today I tried to build a Trello clone and build a fully functional app in like 45 mins. I showed it to a few people in the office and the guy is like "I should quit my job." He built a stock tracking app in 2 mins and added a few features he wanted. I can't imagine the world being the same in 10 years if software writing could be supercharged like this. Replit has really hit it out of the park. I don't need ChatGPT now. I'll just build apps in Replit. I'm a fan and a convert.

SH: It’s been a very long time since I received flowers, because of Mangchi JS: yes that’s right, it’s difficult to give him flowers because we have Mangchi at home so I thought you’d be happy to get flowers since we are on a trip SH: I’ve said that a lot, when we are going somewhere and see couples on a date I’d be like “oh that couple, they got flowers” JS: SH was so happy to receive the flowers that he bought me a lot of clothes. This weekend, I explored a mobile game idea with my kids (they suggested a mobile pokemon-like game) so I had them coming up with ideas for the creatures and I try to visualise them with ChatGPT Images 2.0 and vibe coded a small prototype on Cursor to play around with. The art direction of the creatures are in vinyl toy matte style so it has this toy-like aesthetic quality that I quite like! For a mobile app/game, I went with Expo + React Native to create this mobile app so that I have one code-base for both Android and iOS. So far I'm pretty impressed with Expo's live mobile app preview feature! Being able to easily preview the mobile app on my phone in seconds is a big plus.
