Folks, put on your helmets and grab your BMX bikes, because it’s the most important holiday ever (at least for me): it’s the 40th anniversary of RAD! Woman loses her mind over being on camera decided to destroy property and got treated to two cans of spray. We are at the United States Post Office in South Pasadena, California, where this incident involved a physical confrontation, damaged equipment, and a deployment of pepper spray. The incident began inside the post office lobby, where the cameraman was filming in public exercising his constitutional rights. A female customer inside the lobby objected to being recorded, leading to a brief but tense verbal exchange. The situation rapidly escalated when the woman took it upon herself to grab and damage the cameraman*s recording equipment. The confrontation spilled outside onto the post office steps, where she grabbed onto the cameraman's monopod. During the physical struggle over the gear, the cameraman deployed pepper spray directly at her to break her grip and regain control of his equipment but not before she commits battery. Officers from the South Pasadena Police Department arrived on the scene shortly after. Following a review of the cell phone footage captured during the encounter, police issued the woman a criminal citation on the scene for misdemeanor battery and vandalism (the cameraman noted his $400 monopod was broken during the scuffle). True to form from law enforcement from California where they allow criminals to b get away with anything they want. You can bet if the roles were reversed they would have put the guy in cuffs. While a citation was issued, the local police department cannot formally file charges; instead, the case packet was forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office (Alhambra Branch) for review. A new menace has overtaken us and we are witnessing its growing grip on society-online gambling. As destructive as substance abuse which we are already battling, it’s luring thousands into addiction as ‘entertainment,’ destroying them and their families and corroding our moral fabric. It demands our immediate attention. The government must act on it, it’s their duty. Development is not merely the economic upliftment of people or building infrastructure for them while they are morally and spiritually lowered and lost. That defies its purpose. So comprehensive plan and actions need to be put in place to ensure that these serious concern are addressed on urgent basis. At the community and social level people also have to be proactive dealing with this. All cannot be left to the Government. Religious scholars have a key role to play in creating moral awareness about these issues in the light of religious teachings and values and disseminate the message among people through all mediums available. Addressing the youth during a Nikah Khutba, where I spoke about the need to build our lives on the foundation of Islamic character, self-control, and social responsibility, in the background of these issues. I also appeal to the judiciary to take serious note of this issue and immediately impose a ban on this menace before more damage is done.
