Can this be setup and installed via automation to be consistent with Z-PIT?

Where/how does the belt loop back to the front of the tunnel? We only see the belt leaving, and then going way overhead outside the tunnel. ty

Great question! The conveyor belt is actually 1 continuous loop that runs all the way from the TBM to the surface and back into the tunnel. 1 continuous piece of rubber. At the surface, the belt runs from the tunnel, through the Vertical Cassette, and back to the tunnel. The Vertical Cassette system 1) applies power to the belt and 2) acts as a storage of conveyor belt. As the machine mines, it physically pulls the belt out of the cassette, which can dispense 1200 ft at a time. Once 1200 ft has been dispensed, a new spool of belt is spliced in and the cycle repeats.

So does the incoming empty belt return directly below the outgoing full belt, on the same roller assemblies? That would explain why we don't see it.

While it is one continuous belt loop, the top section is called the “carry belt” (carries the muck out) and the bottom one is called the “return belt” (returns empty to the TBM). They both ride on separate conveyor rollers. The carry belt is supported with more rollers due to being loaded with muck.

OK thanks again, so the return belt is riding close to the carry belt up at the ceiling, we just don't see it (or notice it) in this video because we are viewing it from directly below and the return belt is parallel and close to the carry belt, just going in the opposite direction?

Good idea for an underground trash transporter. Bore the tunnels and install this in the tunnels to catch the trash dropped from deposit stations above ground. Potential net savings for cities. Would be cool to prototype in starbase.

I just read up on this. It’s one continuous belt that grows longer. They maintain a cassette spool outside the tunnel with pulley rollers that maintain tension and slowly play out track as the TBM advances. When the cassette runs out, they stop momentarily to splice in additional track length. At the TBM, as it advances, they add additional rollers and ceiling supports every certain distance, plus motors to even out the tension and share the load.

Oh I know one particular engineer is very happy and very busy!!!

Would be awesome 2 see the boring company get a tunnel project that would help with traffic from the Pittsburgh airport to downtown Pittsburgh and from downtown to a big parking lot in Monroeville so when I go to Pittsburgh I never have to worry about traffic any time of the day.

4 miles per week!? I think that's faster than a snail.

Need to make smaller ones for underground utilities sewer, water, drainage, flood control, electricity... And an even smaller one for geothermal heating and cooling without having to dig large trenches. So cool!

I wonder if they have been approached about underground mining ? Follow a drill result with this rig would be interesting.

Elon, could Space X and the Boring Co get together and develop a boring device that could be operated remotely with robots that maintains the equipment on the moon? A space base on the moon would be better underground away from space junk impacts. #spacex #boringcompany

Hold on, I have an idea.

This is the kind of engineering upgrade that could make a huge difference underground. The speed, tighter turning radius and focus on reliability show how much optimization is going into making tunnel construction faster.
