French psychologist Alfred Binet and his colleague Théodore Simon invented the first practical intelligence test, the Binet-Simon test, in 1905. Binet is known as the "father of IQ tests". Binet's work was motivated by a desire to identify children who had learning disabilities or intellectual differences and could benefit from specialized support. The test was designed to be insensitive to skills or information that children had learned through instruction. The Binet-Simon test included 30 questions that focused on skills like memory, problem solving, and attention, and how people dealt with areas of skill not related to academic understanding. The Binet-Simon test became the basis for the intelligence tests used today. The term "intelligence quotient," or "IQ," comes from Binet's work. The IQ is the ratio of "mental age" to chronological age, with 100 being average.
